I like it. The low angle really brings brings out the floor, which in this shot (unlike most indoor shots )is integral to the shot and quite interesting.

I agree about the floor really adding something. I think it also connects the counter to the rest of the picture nicely, since the counter foot rest is tiled in black and white check also. Really nice shot.

I believe it could be since some people faces are easily recognizable. Private folks are that private and unless they are aware and agree to something like this it can mean trouble.

They're in a public place. Unless you are selling it without model release you're fine.

Well it is a private commercial business. If there are posted warnings or prohibitiions then it would be against management wishes and they can ask you to stop, In this case, the waitress saw me (and often sees me) take out my camera and snap photos in there. Their silence is tacid permission. There are no posted prohibitions. In any case it wouldn't be illegal (in my un-trained opinion) but it would be a civil matter.

Genera rule of thumb, you can take whatever you want, whenever you want. There are places were you can't take a shot for commercial purposes and these are specifically stated.

It's not illegal in any way to take a photo of anyone.

Well....people are in public places alright, but still they (the people) are not public domain. If some of your models happen to catch an unauthorized pic of themselves in a public forum there can be trouble. It dont matter if your not selling it...you took it without them been aware. I see it is your style to shoot people to express the urban or social happening in your neighborhood but maybe opting for some approval would be the wisest thing to do. Maybe a lawyer could help clearing this issue in favor of all members here. Ever wonder why in some pictures like in the newspaper or TV clips some people faces are blurred? I think it is because of what I stated above, dont you think?

Soap box? Sorry....I dont consider this a soap box. I just want to clarify the issue at hand in a mature way.For what it says there if I dont wish that anyone took a pic of me or of my family I should...stay in my home? Avoid public places?? Im not buying it. People should be aware of them been filmed. That seems to be flawed too much in favor of a photographer. All it takes is the right circumstance and a good lawyer to get yourself in trouble....I bet most people will not mind a pic of them, whats wrong with asking?

In the end...lets forget I even tried to clarify the issue. Bringing a soap box comment really ends the discussion. I still think is just wrong. Do what you want, not my problem anyway. I think abusing that "right" (which it is nothing more than an opinion, based clearly in an interpretation of what it seems to be lack of a PRECISE, CONCISE law about it) is just wrong. There are way more aspects of photography than insisting on the same theme, again and again.

It's legal, it's a public place, subject matter is the restaurant. There is no violation of privacy taking place. What's someone going to do? Take you to court because you took a foto of them stuffing their face? It takes money to take people to court...nobody with any sense...mind you was this shot in the USA? Oh no i see canada...like i was saying lol...nobody with ANY sense is going to take you to court over a photo of them sitting eating fries in zellers restaurant.

More than 3 people in the shot - group shot. In a public place? Group shot in a public place. You see shots all the time in the newspaper of a hundred million people walking around at a scene of an accident holding their faces and crying...do you think they actually track these people down and get their permission one by one for their paper?

Security cameras take pictures of you as you go from store to store, place to place. People are being watched constantly, in fact I bet every given day you are recorded at least 10 times if you journey into the town or city in one way or another. we're long past the days of 1984 ;)
