    Wanted: Opinions On DOF

I took this shot at Fort Macon. I like the shot OK, but it's not what I wanted. I was concentrating on the front sight blade, and I really wanted a shallower DOF. So give my your opinion. Does this work for you?

    N80, Fuji NPS 160, Quantaray 70-300mm, shot at f4.

I'd agree with a shallower dof. But then again, I don't know what the front sight blade is, so I'm not sure where you were concentrating

Stuff like this is so hard for me to shoot. Give me a crazy 3 yr old any day.

Is the flat piece sticking up over the top of the barrel, there on the end. I was concentrating on that and the muzzle (the open end of the canon).

    Now you know.

Still lifes are MUCH easier! You can use a tripod, cable release, small apetures...

I think you needed a shallower depth of field as well. The wheel either needs to blur out more or be more in focus

It could, but the high angle seems too much like a snapshot taken from standing height. I would like it to really loom over me. Try moving back and zooming more- at 200 or 300 the DOF will be shallower, I would be inclined to think. Definitely change the perspective. I would like the weapon to be a bit more menacing or ominous. B&W with more grain/contrast? That's always a standard option for antiques....
BTW, how do you like the NPS? I've been thinking about trying out some of the pro print films, but I'm not sure which direction to go. I'm a Fuji fan all the way, so it would be good to hear some opinions.

I think the telephoto worked against you. WIth your Pentax and 50mm you could have shallowed ou the field and also used a closer perspsective to really emphasise the front and the feel of the looking down the cannon's mouth.

Definitely needs a shallower DOF. I think the wheel being more in focus would detract from the subject. Thanks for the comments!

I thought about backing up and shooting it at 300mm. I think a better option would be to shoot it with my 28-70 f2.8 or even my 50mm f1.4. That way I can really take the DOF down. :-)

B&W is an excellent idea. Like you said, it goes with this subject. Adding grain is deffinetly something worth trying. I'll have to play with the image some when I get the time.

I've shot two rolls of NPS, and it's nice film. Here are a few more shots I took with it. Playing With DOF
Mini Photo Gathering In Carteret County

I'm also a Fuji man, and I shoot Superia Xtra 400 as my everyday film. NPS is nice, but I haven't shot enough of it yet to know if it's anything special. Other favorites include Reala (great for landscapes, and nice for portraits), Velvia 50 (THE landscape film), Provia 100, and Sensia 100. Don't let anyone fool you. Sensia is listed as consumer grade film, but it is awesome stuff! Great colors and detail.

Kodak does make one film I like - Porta 160 NC. It's awesome for portraits. It's also why I tried NPS. (I'm a Fuji man!) And why I have two rolls of NPH at home. And why I'm going to try some NPC one day. If Fuji makes a film as good as Porta, then I'll shoot it.

Thanks for the comments. I do appreciate them.

You are right, as usual. The 50mm would be the way to go. I can really crank down the DOF with the 50mm. (My 28-70 f2.8 may also work)

Fortunately, Fort Macon is in my county, so it's just a matter of getting over there to re-shoot it. When I do, I'll be sure to post that shot as well.

Thank you for your input. It is appreciated, as always.
