    Sounds familiar....

    and looks familiar too!

Neat pic. I do not think that I succeeded any better than this. The cloud formation is particularly impressive. And I particularly like the color of the foreground (dark green). Using Velvia, it would have appeared more light. I guess you took this with the D70. The colors are very natural. Good white balance.

Have you ever tried a split ND filter? A 1/2 stop ND filter might have darkened the sky slightly making it more impressive. The horizon being so straight, this could have turned out quite nicely.

    Cheers,

    Steph.

    Hey Steph!

I tought that you would be familiar with this spot (I almost named it "this one is for Steph")... This was the one and only day that I have spent in Vancouver were it was actually sunny (and even then, the sky wasn't crystal clear). Nevertheless, I can't say how I love this place.

I have never used a spilt ND filter (nor an ND filter). I like your idea here though. I can imagine how it would look with a darker sky. Thank you for the suggestion. This was shot with the D70 as you suposed but I have reworked the colours a little in post processing as the original didn't had the saturation I was expecting.

Say, I have just noticed that you were french (I just gave a look at your profile).
Il me fait donc plaisir de te saluer en franais!

Oh, you should definitely try split ND filters.

Cokin has some (P120 and P121) but they are crap. They give a slight red + strong magenta cast to the pic, which you can remove by desaturating these channels in PS. You also loose considerable sharpness when using them with lenses above 100mm. Above 200mm, my AF starts to hunt and the pic becomes blurry even in the viewfinder at 300mm!

I just ordered some Singh Ray ND filters. I have been waiting for 3 weeks now and I am getting really impatient! I will run some color/sharpness tests to determine their range of use. At $100 a piece, they are a considerable investment, mostly for a broke student!

    Avec mes amitiés,

    Steph.

At 100$ a piece this is good money but I assume that it worths it. I recently bought a Nikon NC filter that is nearly 3 time more expensive than a similar Tiffen filter I previously used and the difference is quite obvious. The Nikon is crystal clear. The impact on the pictures (if any) is neglectable. I had (well I still have) a Cokin circular polarizer that I was using on my Nikkor G type kit lense that came with my F65. I used to think that it did a great job but the G type lense isn't exactly high end so I may not be in a good posture to judge about Cokin quality...

Keep me informed about these Singh Ray filters when you receive them.

    bonne fin de soirée!

A Vancouverite specialty! They are there so that people can use them as a back-rest when they go to the beach.

Actually, I heard that, sometime, the logs escape the convoys of tug boats charged to bring them from the logging fields up North to the processing lumber factories near the Fraser River. Since nobody knew what to do with them, they decided to use them this way. Much more cost effective than collecting them and salvaging them!

    Hello Bobby,

Thank you for your kind words! Steph_B is right about the purpose of the logs.

    regards
