I like the second shot more for it's clearer texture on the floor, larger doorway/scene outside and interesting form on the right. Having the door in the shot makes for a more interesting shape for the opening as well being a point of interest itself with its crossbucking and the nice light sliding across it.
Both shots are nice and I like the deep mysterious shadows.

I like the first shot better except for the fire ext on the wall, the shodows are very good and the dark vs light area is balanced for the most part.

Re: Two for your Thoughts . . .

I have seen at least one other photo in this series, I really like the idea. I wish I were that creative. The ability to see the interior in the first one draws me to it, although I do find the fire extinguisher a little distracting, but that is something that really can't be helped and have that composition. I appreciate you left the scene as is, and didn't clone it out. I find the second one to be a little dark for my tastes, I want to see a little detail in the interior.

Question Re: Two for your Thoughts . . .

    Number two Gary..
It is just a better photograph.
The fire extingisher and garbage can are too much.
And I think, that you are going for a little mystery with this series, and the can and extingisher make the scene not so mysterious.

Talk to us, about the hows and whys of this project. What are your thoughts when you are out shooting on it. What made you decide to this project?

I think the second one is too dark, looks like someone went happy with the contrast on PS.

I like the first one best because there is more detail in it and the contrast isn't so extreme. It's looks folksy. BUT, that fire extinguisher, IMO, ruins the shot. Well, not ruins it, but it does affect it. I'm aslo not keen on the house outside the door, but that's just me, nice pic though.

I prefer the first one by far. There is a lovely softness and atmosphere to it and the fire point, in its own little enclosure, and fire bucket are not out of place at all but add interest to an otherwise empty area. There is a something on the right of the picture that possibly could be done wirthout with. Around the doorway I notice something similar to arcs of a circle either side or could it be traces of the clone tool.
    Beautiful photography as usual Gary.

This is a hard call to make because I can't really decide which I prefer. I do like the 2nd(bottom) view because of that quality of mystique & it being somewhat dark. I feel it fits very well with your series over all & don't find it necessary to see all the little details from the inside. The 1st view (top) pic is interesting as well because you can see more of what's going on inside and there are some nice shadows going on although I do agree that the fire extinguisher and the bucket alter the overall appearance and take a little away from the image. Whoa ho! Is that a can in the window?

Re: Two for your Thoughts . . .

Thanks everyone for your input on these two images. I personally am fond of the second shot as it more conveys the feeling that I am trying to bring forth inthis work. I have posted tthe second one again in an edit as I have scanned it over with my new scanner and have been amazed at how much more I have gotten out of the negatives. Personally, I think this second shot is one that I am finding I like very much out of the series. Chunk, you bring up some good points with the door and object (ladder) on the right as to why the pic works best. I also am happy with the symetry of the window and the door in the opposite corners.
    Brian, I had written a entire statement that I presented with this series, but to make it short;
This project is a series of compositions that is meant to bring to the viewer a sense of being inside a structure or shelter and looking out to a glimpse of the world outside. There is something about being inside looking out that somehow seperates us from the world outside giving one a feeling of comfort or security and a sort of reprieve from the outside world. Even though it may onle be a few feet from the doorway to the world, we can feel as if we are merely observers, unseen and unknown, allowing us to pause for some time and enjoy the inner peace and solitude. And there is also the mystery of the "within" never being fully revealed, representing another world to where we can retreat. I can remember as a kid playing in large cardboard boxes turned into makeshift caves, or with friends hiding out under the space under the stairs to our house. There was a certain feeling of escape from the world , an excitement and yet a calming sense of security and serenity.
This is what I feel about it, as well as some mystery as to the "within" itself.
Hope this did not go too deep here, but that is where it comes from
Nina, I swear I did not notice that can there!!! maybe that is why Brian is more up for the second shot. . .no cans!

    LOL Gary!
Not at all, I just think the cans are distracting and have nothing to do with what you are trying to convey.

I like the statement. Other than a few typos, that I am sure are just from typing it in here, it is well written and puts your idea very well.
    Thanks for putting it here.

Re: Two for your Thoughts . . .

    Gary,
I prefer the subtle details of the room in the first pic (the texture of the walls and floor), however bucket and extinguisher are bothersome.
That said, I like the addition of the ladder to the second, but what is jutting up from behind the ladder? Overall I feel there is much more mystery in the second shot, and the light playing off the door in the 2nd shot is great.
    Great job...

PS- were you sneaking some canscapes into that first one?

Gary, I enjoy both these pictures for different reasons. I like the soft atmosphere and the beautiful lighting of the first one. Indeed, it feels somewhat less mysterious than your others pictures of the series as we get to see more of the interior. Nevertheless, there is still an interesting tension going on. There is something comforting yet almost spooky about the scene. Why? I am not too sure how to put this into words but it makes me feel like something (possibly bad) was about to happens. As for the fire extinguisher and the bucket, I don't mind them at all. I don't think that they really add anything to the scene but they are there and they doesn't distract me in any way.

Your second picture is up to the rest of your series, well crafted and mysterious. I enjoy this one for all the reasons that others members have already voiced here.

On a side note, thank your for the statement. I enjoyed your take on your own work.

    best regards

    Seb

Re: Two for your Thoughts . . .

    Hi Gary,

For me, the tough thing about reviewing two images is that one feels a need to choose. I like them both, but I like the second one better. I like it because I like how the door frames another building. I like how the various intersect. The only line that doesn't fit (a "distraction" ??) is the obtuse pole in one of the window frames. Thanks for posting. I enjoy looking at your work.
