    Today's special

I was at the ice cream parlor with my kids today, when one stopped moving to check out the sign. Funny to me because she's four and can't read. I had my camera so I quickly grabbed this shot. I think it's cute. Of course, I have my list of "I wish I'd...". I'm interested in what you all think could have made this a better shot.

Nothing. This is a fantastic candid shot, and I wouldn't change a thing about it. The hands on the hips with her studying the sign is absolutely perfect.

Always interesting when a human is pondering something (or trying to understand).

It's good as is, but I personally would have tried to elim the table from the foreground. To me the table it gets in the way a bit. See the attached crop... I think it's a little stronger this way.

I like GB1's crop. It gets rid of the end of the corner and the napkin that was there before. Wonderful shot, very candid.

    Good shot,

I enjoy both your original version and GB1 crop but I guess that the crop makes for a cleaner, more graphic composition. Congrats for actually making that picture. This is the kind of scene that I see when it's too late (or that I just doesn't see at all)....

    Hi,
I like the original format but prefer the napkin removed. Your description makes the shot more interesting. Just wonder what drew her attention.
    All the best.

Good job on a quick capture. I agree with Yoyo about the crop - the first thing I did when viewing it was scroll so the napkin was just hidden. While the feeling is heightened by knowing that she can't read, it's obvious from the shot that she's absorbed by something on the sign. Think I'll get some wings for lunch.

    Re: Today's special

Thank you all for your input. The thing that bothered my most was also the napkin and table. The problem I had when I cropped it was that it felt too, well, cropped and seemed to have lost some of the original feeling (that and I wanted to brush her hair!)

I should have taken the shot of what she did next which was turn it around to see what was on the other side and then to proceed to grin and spin the sign around in circles around the base making me worry it was just going to fall over.

    Thanks again.

    Re: Today's special

I'd crop just above the napkin and leave the corner of the table in to lend a little depth. It seems flatter if you take the table out completely. Did you ask her about what interested her on the sign?
