Smile Through a Leica: A pic from: Rockport, MA

I shot this with the finest feeling camera I have ever held (and I've even held Hassy's). The Leica MP. A hefty but unbelievably high quality camera (you have to hold it to believe the myths about it) it yielded this very nice shot of Rockport, MA. It used a Summicron 28mm f/2 aspherical. Since it was film and scanned here is the exif info:
    Exposure: 1/125
    Apperature: f/4
    Lens: Summicron 28mm
    Camera: Leica MP
    Meter: Kenko
    Filter: E46 size warming Polarizer.

Feel free to edit it as you please. If you need I'll post a high res version. I'm wondering if this semi-saturate colour tone is nice for it (I did this in photoshop after scanning it) or if I should go full colour (surprisingly not that stunning) or B&W. Also, should I crop?
    The original is underneath.

Please note that this is not my own camera (although I wish it was!!). So I was still getting used to how pics would turn out. I'll try to get a hold of an M8 to take pictures with and post to get a comparison between old school and new school leica's.

Edit: There are now 4 photos. In order these are:
#1 My original image, no modifications.
#2 My original post with some curves edits and lessened saturation.
#3 An attempt at cooling the image with a semi-saturate result.
#4 A fully saturated cooled down version.

Cooled Semi-Saturate (note, I can get rid of the noise eg; reprocess it better if need be. I'm just looking for if this is a good colour style for this pic. I used a fast way to get to this, I can avoid the cloud noise using slower methods).

Fx - Nice image. I prefer the original one at the top. I think it's OK that a sailing shot at the ocean has 'cold' colors (blues, etc). Leica's claim to fame was really their lenses. I wonder how they're doing in the era of digital photography?

The shot is good, but I would watch splitting it in half like this pretty much does... (close anyways). The rocks are a great add, so much that I wish there was more of them. I would crop out a bit of the sky to get rid of the split and also to emphasize the rocks more. The shot is simple, relaxing. Might look good blown up and on the wall. Keep it cold in color though!

I'm going to get the chance to try Leica's M8 Digital Camera (10.3mpix). These days the sensors are mainly made by sony and others, but imagine what a digital camera could do with a Leica quality lens... I just wish my D80 could use summicrons .

Anywho, I've posted some alternates, take your pic or feel free to make your own. I personally like #3.

I can't see your photograph, my work(SHHHHHH) doesn't let me see stuff from Photobucket for some reason.
But what were you doing in Rockport, MA?
I spent a week there last year at The Workshops.

Hey, not bad! I like the different feels here... seems every one has their distinct weather. This shot seems to make me feel the wind, the cold, etc. I still prefer # 2 but think that 3 and 4 are OK also. I'd still crop some off the top.

Brian, I wonder if they're blocking it via a custom DNS? If so, try another DNS and see if it helps. Try 4.2.2.2 (a little trick we use here sometimes, though ours doesn't 86 photobucket. Phooey on photobucket anyways.... they kicked me off for violating their rules )

I was actually in Boston and a friend (the same one that lent me the Leica to play with) told me Rockport was a nice place to go. Its a pretty photogenic place, lots of sailboats, and the best Clam Chowder I've ever had . Try looking at the images at home, if that doesn't work I can attach them but I really don't want to have to go through the pain of resizing them all and converting.

Personally, I'm not really keen on any of these. I think the "film" aspect has suffered by over-processing the photo.

I took the original version and edited it by simply applying autolevels only in PS, and IMO it is much more preferrable to any of the versions above (see below). I think you have a really nice photo if you just manipulate it a lot less and let the film speak for itself.

By the way, you didn't say what film you were using???

I love leica. The color is always solid and sharp. I can help watching the pictures again and again.

    First impression of first image.

WOW! that is one striking picture.
Looks almost 3D. I like it.

I like the treatment in the first shot. I believe the horizon cutting thru the mast hurts the image some what. Maybe if you had taken a few steps left and had open sea behind the vessel it would have worked better. I also think I would prefer a landscape crop.
