These things ae impossible to photograph...

This is the best shot of a great egret in flight I've gotten yet. The wing movement and white body usually result in no detail. Please share your comments and suggestions. D70 and 75-300 ISO 200 1/1250 f/6.3.

I add a stop of light to the exposure(as a starting point) when shooting subjects that are white against the sky, but this seems to be hot on the back already? every situation the exposure comp will vary though

but... the SUNNY 16 RULE never changes

    my suggestion is f8 faster shutter speed ( 1/250 1/750TH ) with ISO 320-400.

this would deepen your focus, sharpen the subject AND SHOULD still render little noise(so I hear about the D70)

Nice position in flight. Yes, these white birds are tough to get without blowing out the highlights. I think also the trick is to try to capture these in the earliest light of morning, just as the sun coming up giving a sof warm glow or late as sun is setting. I have been trying to get a few shots of some Herons and Egrets as well, but am finding myself always short on time here.
i like this anyway because of the position of the flight. Nice work, keep at it.

I agree with what other said, try to use a higher shutter speed. Don't worry to much about noise, shouldn't be all that bad if you're dealing with bright shots like these and if you do have noise, well then I can advice you to try Neatimage; I consider it one of the most amazing pieces of software I've ever worked with in my whole life.
