Greg this very nice indeed. It has a rather calming effect when viewed. The untidy grass etc, in the midst of the perfection and stillness may raise some debate. If I were to do something about it I would clone it all out thus extending the water back into the foreground and leaving the little dock free standing in the water.
But to be honest I am not too sure.
I have a total lack of respect for anything connected with society, except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer. Brendan Behan
I love the Pier. Also love the left side of the sky. those vibrant orange blue hues are great. Not very fond of the right side. I was gonna say if you shot this a bit earlier, then the right side would've been a nice crisp orange (without the muddiness of the colours now on the right). But that would render the left side a lot brighter.. So there's the tough choice. I would've moved to the left of the pier, then shot it so it's on the left side of the frame with those nice oranges behind it. The pier would've (compositionally) looked like a flip of this image. I think that might have worked.
Also, I agree the grassy area is fighting the serenity of the rest of the shot. The shot is so pristine and simple, elegant, but the grassy bit contrasts that and breaks up that feeling i think.
all in all a wonderful image. those points where just nitpicks.

I love it for the most part. Very refined looking photograph, very calm and sharp. Do I think it could be better? yes .. as I find it moderately distracting that the left side is bright and that the detailed areas - grass, right side of pier, etc - are so dark that it's hard to glean any information from them. It's really a mood shot, and it works.

Thanks all,
Tom I don't know if my clone skills are good enough to clone all the the grass out. Maybe I can try though.
Liban I was conserned that the right side might not work. I usually ain't a fan of a sky like this one but the more I looked at it the more I liked the day/night split. Still not sure. I wanted to move more to the right and get the sun in the shot but I would have lost the composition and getting to the right side wasn't possible since I was on a small jetta and was out of room. My lens was't wide enough either.
I plan a return visit soon. Maybe with a prop or two.

Woah! Very cool stuff greg. My first thought was 'large print" when I saw this. How much detail do you have on the horizon line?
Honestly I am such a huge sucker for soft gradients and this one is outstanding. The grass breaks up the stillness in just the right way, grounds the image in my perspective.
