Some shutter speed experiment biking shots

All right, I like these two, I took them today, it was foggy and overcast, so it was good for really slow speeds for action stuff. I took mostly panning, and some tripod motion blur ones. I just got a crappy little 6 inch tripod, it doesnt really hold my camera well, but it stops the shake nicely if I hold it a little. For the first one, I wish I had had my big flash, so I could have gotten him a little clearer, but it probably would be too bright anyway. In the motion blur one, I know it would be sweet with flash, but I dont have rear flash sync, so it would just look like he was going backwards. i just chose to shoot it fully blurry. I like it. Tell me what you think.

I think the one on top could be good if either the rider or the background were caught without blur. But having them both blurry taks away from the speed of the rider, I think. The bottom shot would have been really nice had you used a faster shutter. just fast enough to capture the rider with some clarity and slow enough to show a blue trail behind him. Nice attempts, I think you should try them again. looks like you are going to get some really good stuff with some more experimenting

I agree with gahspidy, a sharp looking rider would work a little better, and for the second shot I really think you need to see the actual rider at the end of the blur, or else have the blur carry completely out of the picture may work as well, more things to try I guess.

Yeah what I have found with the lower one is that I can only get the rider to stand out if I use flash. But my camera doesnt have rear flash sync setting, so if I used flash, he would have appeared to be traveling backwards, which makes it not that cool. In the top one, I dont really feel the blur in the rider takes away from it, but I may try it again with my big flash. I usually get sharper paning shots with the big flash, it seems to lock the rider better.

    Thanks for the input!

I attached an image showing why I couldnt use flash. Its the only thing I dislike about my camera, I really would like to have it.

I like the first one a lot. You can still see the face fine and the little streaks are really nice. The second one is just a little blur coming from or going to a bridge. It would be nice if there was enough sharpness to see what direction the person is headed in and to recognize that it is indeed a person.

    first one

despite the whitish blur on his upper lip--- this shot looks well composed and to slugs like myself...it really helped me to feel how fat you can go on a bike. I like the shirt with the blur and darkness of the background. I think you are well on your way to a really good thing
