    Snowy Egret

Do you like this? What would you do to improve it?

    I like it

I'm a newbie, so I don't know nuthin from nuthin. But...

I like it. Very engaging bird - it reminds me of Cruella DeVille with the hunched back, bushy white coat and bony legs.

To make it better to my eye, I would change the depth of focus to make the the blades of grass less of an attention-getter and make Ms. DeVille pop out a bit more. Maybe lighten it a bit? A flash might have been too much, so maybe just a little slower on the shutter?

Do you know the type of bird it is?

    LL,

The detail in the highlights is blown. Have you tried spot metering off the brightest part of the bird and going up 1.5 stops from there? That method worked for me when I shot these.

Composition...I dunno, doesn't "grab" me. I would like to see the BG more blurry though, open up if you can.

How to tell the most experienced shooter in a group? They have the least amount of toys on them.

Thanks for the comments and especially for the tips, Sebastian. I'll try the exposure you've suggested. Not much I can do about the f/ stop - I need a bigger lens.

    P.S. It's a snowy egret.

It saddens me to tell you to spot meter...it's been months since I've had a true spot meter...
