Hey Danielle. Care for a critique simply for the way this photo makes me feel? Technically, I'm not qualified to say much, but as an observer, I love this!

The tree gives me a feeling of a balerina dancing on a frosty starry night. Very elegant. How's that for a critique?

Lovely shot, great affect too with the black and white. The one thing that's a tad distracting is the crop. With the bottom most branch touching the edge of the picture on the left, it's a tad distracting and could be dealt with!

    Awesome shot,

I like the isolation of the tree. Was it under a street lamp or something? The isolation just adds to the quiet beauty of the picture. I can just imagine the snow softly falling, the tree standing alone. Kind of almost like it is onstage. Very nice.

I fimd it very pleasing and relaxing. But I find like it was said before, the tree is not quite centered, and throws it off the side, as well as the snowflakes appear to be falling up? Not a big beal, I just happened to notice. But I really do like it. The lighting is perfect and the black and white tops it off!

That works for me! Seriously though, I appreciate all opinions - technical or instinctual - and I like your interpretation. Thanks for taking the time!

Thanks Jared - I noticed that too. Of the shots I took this was the one I liked best, but I'll have to take another look and see if I have one without that issue.

Thanks Dzerhinski. The tree is at a tiny rest area at the end of a bridge, so yes, you nailed it with the street lamp. As I drove by I noticed how pretty it looked, but I didn't have my camera with me. I went home, picked it up and then had to drive back across the bridge, turn around and go back again so I could get back to that side.

Thanks PhotoGimp. The snowflake effect is probably due to the fact that I used the on-camera flash to get the lighting right. Now that you point it out, I find that I do notice it especially in the large flake top right. Maybe I can clean it up a little before I send it for printing.

Very nice shot, Mig. Looks like fine art. I really like your determination at getting the shot. I agree with there needing to be some more space on the left so the branch does not appear to be cut out. You can easily fix that in this image by increasing the canvas size, and then cloning in the bg to fill the added space on the side then crop again leaving space on both sides of the tree.

Thank you very much Gary. Since I'm not too confident with my cloning skills I went with the smaller cloning job and cloned out part of the branch. This is a rough example of the 8x10 crop I sent for printing yesterday, although I think I may end up printing the 8x12 as well because I really hated sacrificing the top and bottom.

    Re: Snow Falling on SomeKindOfTree

Good work, Danielle. That was a better idea since it only required simply cutting away a small amount of branch with no harm done to the tree;) Yes, you should go with the 8x12 as this cropped version takes away from the feel that the original has. This is more like a portrait of the tree whereas the original with the black sky and snow falling above it placed the tree in it's setting and gave it a mood that is strong to the image.
