    Snake

    Any car guys on here?

    I noticed:

    1. wash your wheels
    2. how do I adjust the focus so that the whole car is in focus? it seems about the front wheel/mirror area it loses focus. I wanted the background out of focus a bit but the ground and car completely sharp. or is that not possible with the particular camera I used (canon S3 IS). is it possible with my new camera (canon 450d)?

This was on a tripod with no filters or lenses.

Any of the guys doing car photography on here, what lenses do you suggest for your work...outdoor, racing, and in garage? filters? the screw on basic type or the gelatin style like canon sells?

I dont use a filter for shooting cars, racing or track days, you can take a look at my site for some ideas, I will help where I can. I use a Canon 30D

Well rats, I hit send or something, what I was going to say is, when you shoot a car, its all about the light, sun or otherwise. Others may disagree, but I shoot a a lot by hand, especially when doing a shot like you did, I get better movement of the camera angle wise. I have tried filters but found for me, it dimmed the color to much.

I really like the angle of this shot, i wish the other car facing it in the distance was pointed towards it and not just parked.

for your question, and this will NOT answer your question but probably simplify it for others. So you want to focus from the immediate to about 10-12 ft ahead to capture the car in focus then have the rest out of focus? I couldn't even begin to think about it that technically. I have no clue. Having said that I think it have to do more with the lense you were using for your cam more than anything. And if a such thing exists of setting ranges for DOF then hopefully one of the members that actually knows their stuff is going to answer you.

But I really like the approach and angle u took here. very menacing. It's almost like a challenge kind of a shot. and there are no competitors in sight, especially not those that are simply parked in the distance .

I noticed the same things, LOL! I did not see much difference in shake between shooting by hand versus on a tripod with the 3S IS, I am sure it will probably be night and day with the 450D from what I am being told.

I picked up the remote and everything in case I run into shake problems with the 450D, but I always felt the tripod was very bulky and hard to use for car stuff. Especially when I'm trying to document something and I'm ripping apart one of my racecars in the garage and I just clean my hands, pick up the camera, snap snap snap go back to work. When I'm shooting cars I just change angles so much it becomes annoying, I guess I need to find either a monopod or a really quick change easy to use tripod.

Being that the 3S IS was almost solely autofocus, would a manual focus lens on the 450D give me the effect I want or does my 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS lenses have that capability?

    Re: Snake

Well, once again, I have to be different. I dont know about the manual focus simply due to the fact I cant trust my eye sight  and I dont have photoshop so I cant adjust to much of a blur, Im sure some one here can help with that. Racing photo's (for me) are different than still, I just shoot still over and over till I find what works, its fun and for me again, a great way to learn. Cant wat to see more!
