Scottish birds

Was travelling home last week and took a couple of shots of some birds around the house, would be interested to see if there are any comments, scanned negatives, cropped images, Canon 70 - 300 DO IS lens.

The first shot seems a little off, the colors are nice, but the sharpness isn't there. The second one is a great capture, and a very well composed shot. Were these cropped?

Yes they were both cropped, I have attached the originals below, any recommendations based on these would be greatly appreciated!!
