    Salt Lake City Dusk

I froze my ass off tonight to get this. But that doesn't make it good and I remain unsure about it. What does the peanut gallery think? You know I take critique seriously. So don't be shy about giving your opinion.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were flying in a helicopter or something to get this photograph.
That said just where were you when you did this?

Right! I have just never been up that high.
It's a fine photograph John, I don't think I have ever seen a view of our fair city from that vantage point before.
I bet would be pretty marketable around here.
I like the line you created, from the capitol building along though the lights of State Street.

It's really easy to get there. I've been looking all over for good places to shoot downtown and I think this is my favorite yet. I messed with the composition a whole bunch and finally ended up with this just because of that line you mentioned. I'm thinking about going back and moving farther to the east so I can move the capitol building in tighter, though. I might try getting a little lower, too.

I am not sure I'd move it, the capitol building, too much, maybe just enough to give it a little more foreground, but that's it.

Looks to me like it has a blue tint across the entire picture. Maybe a slight color adjustment is in order, Jeff

Seems a bit flat and misty, like the the air wasn't super clear. Note: My laptop screen sucks.

I like view-from-above shots like this. Not something you'd hang on the wall, but a cool view of something from a different angle.

Thanks for the comment, Grandpaw. You know, the light does shift blue when the sun goes down. The adjustment would actually be a huge one and it would wack out the street and car lights, which are already warm. Do you think warming it up would really improve it?

I don't know if you'd want to warm it up, I think it would detract from the cool wintry feel..

    Re: Salt Lake City Dusk

I tried changing the color by -15, -40,-42 and thought it looked better. If getting the blue tint off is warming it up then I think you should. Also maybe a touch of sharpening and see what you think. This wouldn't be the first time I was out voted on what to do with a picture but try it and see what you think, Jeff

    Re: Salt Lake City Dusk

I know that the atmosphere gets blue, but I agree that this seems a little too much. It may be accurate, but our eyes usually compensate to tone it down a bit.

If I were making any adjustment to the blue, I might twiddle with the luminescence of it rather than the tint. Maybe make the cyans less luminescent and the dark blues more. (or the other way around. just a guess off the top of my head based on the adjustments I made to my grand canyon shots, in which I noticed that blue cast quite dramatically.)

I think the little points of light look SO sharp, that it calls attention to the flatness of the trees. I'd like to see a little more contrast in those trees, which I think adjusting the cyans and the blues might do.

I love the composition as is, though.

Wow, this is nice. I really like the geography of SLC. Would not live there if you paid me, but a nice place to drive through

My nephew was in one of the burn units in view of this shot i think. He is fine. But odd to see a kid in intensive care in that way. SLC has a fine burn hospital.

Nice pic there mate...kick @ss view you had from the city...I like it.

As for the technical stuff goes I would play a little boosting the mid-tone contrast to try enhancing it a bit. Also I might try to crop a bit more in the bottom to have a sort of "panoramic type of shot instead of a "square" one.

Really nit picking, I would have liked less blue (time of day) and a longer shutter speed (for more light trails from cars and to get it slightly more exposured)

    Re: Salt Lake City Dusk

First thing I noticed was the blue and it seemed excessive to me but things don't look like that around here at dusk. But then we aren't as high and dry as you are. If it really looks that way at that time, then I say leave it.

I would noo warm it but go with less blue and a little sharpening. I am thinking the blue is what is making it look soft. Beautiful shot!

good time of night to shoot this. I think the two streets to the right make this shot. I wish you panned to the right a bit to get those streets on the right third of the frame. other than that looking good!
