    Resting in the mountains

Hi all ... as I have worked through my pictures from Italy, I came across this one that I quite like. Any comments would be very appreciated. It was just a couple (no idea who they were) enjoying a rest while they took in the view. The pic was taken on top of Mount Baldo (about 6000 ft) with Lake Garda below.

    Cheers

    Great scenic shot!

    Nice composition.
I like the people off to the corner of the frame, they are looking into the photo, which leads my eye in too.

Yes I like the composition too. The placement of the foreground, lake, and mountains/sky is just right. Placement of the couple off center to the right definitely helps lead the eye through the image and also adds interest to the foreground. The top left is blown out in the sky but I'm ok with it here. I love this image. Thanks for sharing

Beautifully done Mike, an ND grad probably could have helped with the sky. I said it before your compositional skills are top notch.

This pic tells a story. Great for showing what's going on. I agree that the sky's blown out though. Maybe a grad ND or even a color ND would help. The people really help to 'size' the lake.

Great pic, if it wasn't for the blown out sky it would be 100% perfect.

    Re: Resting in the mountains

Like the others, I think the composition is perfect with the couple to the side looking in.
The blown sky doesn't bother me very much but might be better if it wasn't.
Might be just my preference, but I wish the couple was in sharper focus.
    It looks like a post-card.

Like Frog & Canuck935, the blown out sky doesn't bother me much, if at all, and I really like the play of color between the green and blue!

    Re: Resting in the mountains

Thanks all for your helpful comments .. I was unsure of the sky myself. Here's a similar image, taken in much the same place: a candid of my daughter reading - the sky is better I think.

I guess I am the Lone Ranger here but the white balance seems off and the picture is soft to me. Just one man's opinion so take it for what it's worth, Jeff

    Re: Resting in the mountains

    Mike -

Another interesting shot. But I agree with Jeff that something is off here, and not just the colors... perhaps the sun was too bright and the resulting contrast wipes things out: her book & pants are devoid of detail, though the dark areas seem OK. Her hair also seems unsharp but that might be due to the sun hitting it like it is. As for the colors, that blue just seems too saturated to me.

Is it me or does digital photography seem to blow out the bright areas too easily? I see that with my photography a lot and it is really limiting what I know I can get away with.

    Re: Resting in the mountains

GB1 ... you are right of course - digital does not seem to have the same "latitude" as film in very contrasty scenes like this, especially when the air is a little thinner. I tried applying the PS warming filter which helped a lot with the blues, but made the sky even worse. It was around 2pm on a very bright and sunny day which doesn't help. Oh well, I never claimed to be a landscape man

    Cheers
