A pic I took in the desert,

in the mojave desert just west of boron,I have been trying to get a really good shot of these 2 abandoned shacks and obviously I am having a hard time focusing,it is about a half mile from the highway and I have been too lazy too walk out to it,what thing,or things should I do differently to get a better shot of this place,I am using my tokina 80-400 to capture the pics and manually focusing is a bit of a chore for me,I shut my truck off and put the camera on the bed of the truck so it doesn't move and fully extend the lens to 400, I think it is a cool place and would make for a really good rob zombie movie, thanks ,

Re: A pic I took in the desert,

Depends if you are at infinity or not; if so, just setting it to that and using an aperture of a little higher than wide open. That is, if your max aperture is f 5.6, use f 8.0.

If you are not at infinity, you just have to do several shots while focusing the best you can and use a smaller aperture. Btw, I assume that this lens is manual focus only.

You say that you're supporting the camera with the bed of the truck, so I won't suggest a tripod. But you should consider one anyway

Also, some lenses are super sharp, and some are not. Which are you using? Make? Other specifications?

To be honest, your pic does not look that far off from what I would expect. Digital shots often need sharpening in post processing, .. It's just assumed you will do that.

Re: A pic I took in the desert,

good eye to see this shot, i like it but your right it does need to be sharper, i reckon get on your hiking boots and go for a little walk and see if you can get a sharper shot nearer the shacks, you done well from 1/2 a mile away tho....

Re: A pic I took in the desert,

I don't know why you aren't using auto-focus. Putting in spot focus mode and using a smaller aperture should work.
Your sensor needs to cleaned unless that's a bird and if it is should probably be removed.
