    The Outside Barber

I have been kicking this one around a couple of days. I haven't really done much but clean it up here and there. But since I collect Barber Shop pictures I couldn't pass it up. What do you think? likes and don't likes? To much Grain? Thanks.....

The grain doesn't bother me and I do find the shot quite interesting.
I wish the guys head wasn't in front of the sign.

I like the composition Greg, maybe a hint of contrast.
Please ask to edit photos and I'll do the same!

I like your composition and the entrepreneurial spirit of these guys. Did you see anyone get a cut?

I like the idea and the composition. Not so crazy about the grain. I wish the depth of field was shallower so that the street in the BG was softer.

    Hi Greg,
I like the atmosphere depicted by the photo. The two guys seem very desperate for a customer. The empty street also suggests that they have a slim chance to get a customer.

Lots of atmosphere here, Greg. I like the grittiness. A pure 'street' scene. Well done.

I usually don't like grain but it fits the mood of this photo. Nicely done.

    Re: The Outside Barber

Good shot Greg IMO it is a tad bit to grainy but nice composition. I am wondering what has their attention they seem to be both focusing on something which makes you go unnoticed while you shoot ,good timing. I have had some top notch shaves off these street barbers noting gets as close as a cut throat blade.

    Re: The Outside Barber

    Greg,

Good composition with placement of the walls, street, and barbers.

However it is too processed/grainy and appears to be de-focused. This detracts from the overall impact of the photograph for me as I look and immediately wonder why, for example, that the guy talking on the cell phone is in the sampe focal plane as the police car. I know of course he isn't but that's the quick impression I get from this image.

You have good lines and contrast in the photograph and I feel this would be much stronger with the lines being a sharp counterpoint.

This is a real street photo. It illustrates something very unique and interesting. I would give it 2 thumbs up at least.

I like the scene and your composition alot here , Greg. They remind me of little kids that set up a lemonade stand. . . .were they giving cuts outside or just sitting in front of a shop?
I too wish the guys head was not blocking the sign.
The grain works here, but it looks like futher image degradation going on here beyond that.
Overall, because of the scene itself, I like it.

    Re: The Outside Barber

Thanks all. I was 50-50 on the grain. I though I shoot this with Reala but thinking back it might have been Portra. I agree about the sign but as I started to move over the patrol car moved into the shot and I wanted it in it. After that the guys noticed me and it was all over. I thought that having the word "Barber" clear was enough. I always enjoy your thoughts and ideas. You help me so much, you will never know.
Don, I always think about your work when I am on the streets. We have different styles but certainly the same taste. I like what you do.

The sign is truly not a problem at all. Totally obvious at a moment's glance what they're doing (or hoping to do).

    Re: The Outside Barber

I really like it. I like the grain (although I would like to see the image with a tad less), I like the bald guy underneath the ''barber'' sign, I like the police car in the back ground, composition could not be better, The grays are excellent...

Nice, in fact, often when I am out street shooting I think to your style of shooting as I really like it...Looking at things through the eyes of Greg...

I really like the shot! I think that if you could have seen the entire sign and in small readable print it said "By appointment only" It would have put it over the top for me, Jeff

    Re: The Outside Barber

    Greg,

Been meaning to check this thread out. The grain doesn't bother me but the lack of resolution and general jagged edges is a bit offsetting. I like how the scene opens up on the left side and like how the (apparent) cop car is there, creating a feeling like it's an edgy side of town. I wish the Barber sign was more visible. It somehow seems a tad vacant of subject, probably because there's two of the fellows (making it hard do know which to look at) and neither is looking at the camera, or showing much emotion. But it is still interesting. I do think it would be better as a clean photo instead of the intense, grainy effect. Just my opin.
