    Orton Imagery Daffodils

A while back, Michael (mjs1973) posted an image called A Painted House that was done with a technique called "Orton Imagery". Here is the link:

    A Painted House

I tried using that technique on this macro image of some daffodils in my front yard. It isn't quite following the procedure, since it started out as a shallow DOF shot as opposed to long DOF, but I thought the results were pretty good and wanted to know what you folks thought about it. Has anyone else tried this technique?

(For completeness, here is the link to the article in "Nature Photographers Online Magazine" that Michael provided: http://www.naturephotographers.net/a.../dw0106-1.html)

    Marty,

I have never heard of this orton imagery but I LOVE it. Your shot is superb, very "3D" like and I love the subtle colors and the strong subject. I love your shot, wouldn't change a thing. Did you actually do two shots any layer them or did you just do another layer and copy it on?

Great shot though, I love it!

    Re: Orton Imagery Daffodils

Thanks Jared! I did the 'digital version' of the process. To be precise, I made a dupe layer with Screen blending mode at 100% and flattened. Then I made another dupe layer and applied Gaussian Blur at 50 pixels and selected the Multiply blending mode, then flattened. I plan on doing some shots with the slide technique to see if I can get the effect "in camera" so to speak (since I will still need to "crush my slides" together in PSE it will still be a Digital Art image, but I would like to be able to do it with only the camera and not the filters. )

Marty, this is quite beautiful. I love how gauzy the white petals are, behind the sharper orange of the middles. And then against the dark background...they just look perfect.

Thanks Emily! I am really pleased with the way it turned out! I went out today and tried to using the original Orton process, though shooting digital instead of slide. I am about to process the images to see if I can get it to work with layers in PSE without all the fillters!
