i respect your opinion, but you might want to do a little more research into abstract photographers before you make judgements like that..... aaron siskind is a good place to start.

The really strong points about this photo, are that it contains a nice range of tones and textures. But, I am unsure of what it is.

I think what is preventing my enjoyment of this photo is the fact that the title has nothing what so ever to do with the subject matter. Maybe it is just me, but I feel like I am driving down the highway, and all of a sudden I shift into reverse. Well, maybe not that bad . Myabe it is just me and abstract. Glean what you can out of this post. I am not sure what I should say. Nice tones and texture, but I am still puzzled. :frown:

the title is taken from a Robert Motherwell series called, "elegy to the spanish republic"

Robert Motherwell is one of the origional abstract expressionist painters he was in the same group as jackson pollok, willem de kuning and others. this piece reminded me of the series motherwell did, hence the name... titles are mainly meaningless, and if anything should let the viewer draw their own conclusions... i'm sorry if you all felt confused and wanted to recognize some representational figure in the picture, but thats not really what art has been about for about 100 years.

iJoe, I may be wrong here, but i think what the others were trying to express is that the wouldn't know how to crit something when they aren't sure what it is supposed to be. Hence, the explanations with a lot of photos posted here. While I enjoy art, and have many books here in my library, i still didn't "assume" or "recognize" this was supposed to be an abstract in the style of any artist. Honestly, I thought you took a picture of a wall with some cracks in it, and possibly some winter frost left over.

What may have helped is if you posted in your original message that it is an abstract in the style of Motherwell. Perhaps not, just trying to help.

    like the photo ijoe,

there are a lot of contemporary artists over here in Ireland working in this sort of vein, be it through photography, painting etc.

It has a rather strong landscape feel to it, and even more so when you orientate it differently. The colours and tones reflect this feeling i think.

    cheers
    anew.

That's what I was thinking, I thought it was frost on the ground.
