    Once Upon A Time. . . .( view from within )

Shot from inside an abandoned military building. . . took some risks getting this as this was a very restricted area . . .will say no more. How do you feel about it.. for some reason , I had lots of trouble getting this image to upload and have reduced its resolution and file size significantly. image ready for printing has more detail in the dark areas. . . anyway. . finally got it on.

    Hello Gary
The whole proceedure here cannot have been easy; from getting a decent exposure to getting an acceptable image for posting. Anyway, despite the lack of detail in the darker areas it still works. The winner here is your eye.

Another winner, Gary. The chair is positioned perfectly to direct our attention. Nice work.

A very compelling image. I'm not sure why but for me it gives a feeling of hopes unfulfilled, as if there was someone who spent a lot of time alone on that chair looking out at the world, and feeling separated from it. Now they are gone and it is too late to be a part of it. Quite sad really. Any image which makes you start building a story like that around it has to have a lot going for it. Nice one.

    Regards,

    matt

I really like this, Gary. You have established the mood very nicely with your confident exposure.

However, I believe I would like it more if the scene outside (which is nicely blurred) had a bit more impact and the scene inside had much more contrast to accentuate the light and shadows that you have captured. I hope you don't mind my posting a version showing what I mean - you may not like it as it might change the mood you intended and have captured so well...

    Re: Once Upon A Time. . . .( view from within )

    Hey Gary

I like this one a lot. I looove the mood. The chair facing the window is classic - but for some reason the broken up floor is what gets me. It suggests energy or action to me - as if the chair had crash landed in the room and dug up the floor!

My suggestions: 1.) clone out that bright white thing just above the chair's arm, 2) the subject in the window bothers me. I would either blow it out or darken it - I'm not sure which. It might not be bad except there's a tree (or couple of them) right in the center of the frame that ruin it for me. I might treat the window as a separate picture itself and put some work into its contents. 3) You already addresed it, I would also like to see more detail in the blacks.

    Excellent work!

Really like how much contrast is in this picture, it really sets the mood. I'm a fan of having a lot of contrast in a b&w (I think I'm in the minority, most people like detail?). Most of the time I go overboard, whereas your spot on.
The window really captures my attention. Nice work with this series as a whole, it is a great idea and ALL the photos in the series are looking great.
Also, nice job getting a picture where few will venture.
    Cheers.

Thanks all for the points, thoughts, and critque. Tuna, I appreciate the time spent to share your vision. Matt, I like your interpretation on this, and usually find myself feeling things along that line.
I will be taking all points into consideration. Thanks all.

As a newcomer to this forum I've obviously missed out on your series. What is the story of this series and can they all be seen in an album/gallery somewhere. Would love to see them.

Hi back from Christmas in Wales - NO photos taken!

I like the shot especially with the mods Tuna made.

Nice composition. I think I would have left the view through the window with a little less contrast as in the original. It now really centres your view on the window, whereas I was looking on the original as the desolation and loneliness of the chair was the main focus.

Gary its up to you as to what your trying to convey with the photo.

Whichever way you go its another great photo.

    Re: Once Upon A Time. . . .( view from within )

Thanks for the replies. i like the added contrast in the foreground area but will leave the window area somewhat soft.

Overbeyond. . .This is just part of a series I have been doing that just is about being inside a structure or shelter and looking out from within. I only have been posting them here for feedback and advice but you can find them by looking through my threads started. They are called; View from within, view from within ll , Central Park. . under the arch , abandoned warehouse , ski lift motor shack, Drain pipe, storm drain, park ave.- under the metro north, from inside out, once upon a time.
