This would be my pick of this series so far GB.

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

Very good composition and focus. Exposure is also very good, with very goo tonal range. What I love are the colors - especially in the upper part of the photograph, where water meets the sky and the two blend into one. Nice work.

Oh yeah! That's the salty stuff! Nice one GB! The crusty texture on the dock versus the smooth color gradation of the water and sky is great. It's too bad to hear they are clearing out all of the old buildings there. At least you've gotten some good coverage of it over the years.

    Re: Old Salton Dock

    Thanks everyone.

This is a three-image HDR. It didn't really need it but I took the images just in case, and it seems to have worked. I spent about 15 minutes merging and tweaking: in the end, I found that lowering the contrast made for a more aesthetically pleasing final product. Maybe this is because less contrast is more soothing?

I also had a slight issue with artifacts in the water. I decided to try something new to solve that; I masked off the water and sky areas around the objects in a 'horseshoe' shape, feathering, and applying a slight smart blur. This amplified the softness in the background water-sky and eliminated the artifacts. This was new to me because I've never used geometric shapes for such blurs, etc, instead applying them to the whole image or to specific problem areas. Finally, I cropped out some of the left side and top to balance out the composition.

Anyway, since the impressions were positive, seems like it worked.

Armando, you are right about the slight blow out. Maybe I can fix it.

Cindy, it's funny what artists consider a gold mine. I need to assemble all my old pix of the SS and maybe build an on-line blog/webpage of how it was. I'm missing it's heyday though back when it was a resort.

Tks also, llewpics, Pete and Liban.

Cindy, if you're really game I may indeed take you up on that offer. Maybe some weird freaky music to go along with it. what else..? It sounds like you're good with this.

btw - when are you going to finally pose a band against the SS? An expensive field trip, I know.

Thanks too Greg. It was hotter than hell but w/ little a haze above the lake (sea) that added some mystery.
