    Old Glory

I was going down the beach in Biloxi, Ms. today and spotted this flag and took it out of the window in the car. The only thing I did to this was re size it and post it and nothing else. It was taken with my Nikon D80 and Nikon 70-200VR2.8 lens, Jeff

The focus seems a bit weird. The shot is a little too busy with so much going on. The flag is nice and strong though. so it doesn't get lost. but my eye spends a lot of time just looking around the place. I guess the biggest problem here for me is flow. my eye just wonders aimlessly around the image. instead of being guided around. hope that helped!

Thanks for looking and leaving your comments. The reason I think the focus might look strange is because the palm tree and the flag are about the same distance from me and are in focus and the rest is not. As far as being too busy I guess I am missing that point because most of the background is green unless you are referring to the rooftop behind the flag. As far as your eye wondering around the picture I was looking at it as a single subject of the flag which gets my attention like a picture of a big bird would be with the background being less important.

I think what I need to start doing is posting more in the critique section so I can get more opinions of what other people are seeing instead of going with just what I think. The more opinions I can get on my work the more I will learn. Thanks again, Jeff

Hey Jeff, u should definitely post more often here, not only does it really help, we can use another critiquer around here ;)

What I meant by busy is the following, I know the bg is all green but. I was talking about.

    1. the brick wall, a little of it at the bottom.
    2. the black sign, bottom left,
    3. the palm trunk and its leaves on top.
    4. top of the house + chimney
    5. a black fence with purple plants
    6. another diagonal branches below the left side of the flag.
    7. finally, the giant dark trunk going across the BG entering from center left.

There's so much to take in.

Colorful. A bit of a distracting background with that tree there, but sometimes you have to take what's offered. I like how the flag's flying right to left.

I think it would be a stronger photo if the flag were more to the right, as if it were leading a parade, and away from the tree trunk that is immediately behind it right now. The two vertical line compete with each other I think.

Well I worked on this and tried to eliminate the things on your list and this is what I came up with. What do you think? LOL It does get rid of all the distractions and puts the focus more on the flag. Jeff

I think the bg is a little to bright after the edit!
