New Shell Shot, HDR, of course (hey, I'm learning)

So how does this one match up? Its a closeup of a shell (Canon 100mm macro with a +2 closeup lens attached)

It's soft with what seems to be very limited DOF. What did you think HDR was going to add to this image? Just wondering.

I agree that it looks a bit flat. HDR processing can absolutely add detail and texture, but I would layer blend this to pull some of it out. It needs more contrast in the mid tone areas to work I think.

    Here's the unprocessed middle exposure:

I can see where the finished shot in the first post has its problems as those of you stated. What happens is that I see an improvement from this shot. But, like I say, I'm learning, so thanks for the comments. I will be working on this.

BTW, feel free to fix 'er up.

I agree it is flat and soft. Don't think HDR is what you want to shoot for here. HDR likes to take those shadows and highlights and pull them closer to a normal exposure for those areas. For this you probably want to turn off all the lights and get a point light source and start playing with aiming it at the shell from different directions to create different shadows. See if you can't get the tops of the ridges lit up while leaving the valleys in shadow.
