Spinning out in the learning curve & 1st bird in flight shot

F stops, exposures, DOF, IS, USM, Macro, (micro?), Prime, tubes tc, ISO…

Other than very basic grasp of 'point and shoot', this is all new to me. However, I am making advances. It is getting easier to figure out why I DIDN'T get the shot!

My first attempt at 'in-flight'. (Not Master Bevb's 'true in-flight', but a simple display flight.)

Was this with the 180mm ?

Though slightly on the soft side compared to your insects, this is still a great catch. I have been dabbling in bird imagery for a few years and flight images are not the easiest to get. They take fast AF or MF, a good eye and knowledge of your prey!

Shot with the EF 300mm and the 1.4 Extender EF 1.4x - II

He was roaming the trees, but, everytime I thought I was close, he'd move. This shot was when he was on top of a telephone pole out at the edge of the property. I was about 35 yards away, pointing up!

The 'knowledge of prey' thing was what enabled me to get the shot. I have several of the whole 'display loop', but, I had the shutter speed too low and they were blurred and grainy. I bumped it up a bit, got two more shots before he flew off.

Thanks for the compliments and encouragement! I'm going to keep working on the technique and I hope to improve the quality, in time.

Thats a very nice shot. I'm a newbie here as well, have yet to get even a half decent bird in flight pic.

    Thanks!

I'm attempting to digest all the information I get from everyone around here. Then, to go out and still get my shots without 'overthinking' what I should be doing can get overwhelming.

Unlike quetzal, I'm not a newbie here and I've yet to get a decent shot od a bird in flight. I'm envious.

You managed to capture this mocking bird quite well.
