    New Gallery!

    The new gallery is here!

    http://gallery.photographyreview.com/

It's been a long time coming and I hope it was worth the wait. We've put a lot of effort into making this something that photographers will really like. I think it may be one of the best things we've ever done for PhotographyREVIEW.com and PCPhotoREVIEW.com.

Please give it a workout. Post some photos, take a look at your member gallery, start rating photos, and let me know what you think. I'm very, very pleased and excited about this new addition to the sites.

    Well done, lad...

You've really outdone yourself this time, PJ. It all looks great. I especially like the way you have the subjects broken down...

It looks really good. I like the way it works, too.

With both vehicles and sport - where do you want motorsport?
Or shall I put them in either, at random?

    Put them in both!

You can include any photo in up to three categories. So put them in both the Sports and Vehicle categories.

Glad you like it. I feel like this site is finally starting to tap its full potential. Note that you can also view reviews for the equipment used, other photos taken with the same equipment, member galleries, etc. Now we just have to the ball rolling with lots of photos and comments!

    Spread the word!

    Excellent job!

Been to the new Photo Gallery, and just love everyone's pics. (Especially your cat).
The pictures all look great, what I have noticed though is that the majority of people have expensive cameras. I could never afford a $1000 camera, which here in Canada would be alot more. Would I still get geat pics with a cheaper camera?
Hoping someone will post pics with a cheaper digital camera.
    Thanks

    Repost

    Barb-
This thread is getting a little off-topic - especially for the Photo Critique forum. Your question is a very good one, though. Please repost it on either the Help Files or the General Digital Cameras forum. As I said, it's a great question, but I ust want to move that discussion to the proper forum.

    Thanks-

You guys obviously put some real effort into the Gallery and I want to say thanks for that. Anything that will enhance the forums in the long run is a good thing. I will say that I don't really see enough differentiation in purpose between the Gallery's voting system and the Critique forum. I think probably it would be best to leave any voting anonymous, and allowing no elaboration in order to distinguish them a bit more.

This might help the people who are too shy to post their thoughts in this forum, as well as those who maybe like to post critiques but are short on time and just want to pop in a quick for some photos they like. Right now, any vote also creates a post with your name and vote on it, and unless you go looking for it, it won't be obvious that it's there.

I think this forum should be the place for serious discussion on the merits of a photo, and that place should simply be an anonymous way to quickly glance at a photo and give it a rating. I might also suggest: break down that point scale into something that has some consistency across voters.

    0-5 Stars for Exposure Quality
    0-5 Stars for Composition Quailty
0-5 Stars for Color, Contrast and Texture.

    Or something similar...

..that way the people posting the photos can know what people like and don't like, without having to engage in discussion about it. Otherwise, one man's 9 is another man's 5, and so on. The votes have to be based on some common criteria, otherwise I am not sure what the value will be to the person who posted the picture.

    How does one...

... navigate to the new gallery from the homepage? I don't see a link in the Galleries page.

I am not able to see most of the images posted on this new system. A few here and there at best. Is it because I'm not allowing a boat load of cookies into my computer? I hope not. I've really enjoyed this site in the past, and would like to continue. Please reply. Thanks.

Are you talking about the new gallery, or this Photo Critique forum? Can you e-mail me some details about your computer system? What OS, modem speed, browser, etc. I want to make sure everyone can use the new gallery.

    Thanks-

The suggestion that PuckJunkey had about a point scale is a good one. Not many people seem to have the time to comment or give constructive critique to a post. The point scale would allow anyone to quickly rate a post and give the posts author specific feedback on what it is that many like or feel needs improvement with a photo.
Also, one thing I really liked about this photo critique gallery is that every time I log on I can immediately see all the threads that I have commented on and whether or not there is any new posts on that thread. Not sure if I can do that with the new site, or maybe I have just not figured it out yet.

    Good Suggestions

    PuckJunkey-
Your suggestions were good. Some of them aren't practical from a technical standpoint, though. We can't really have three separate ratings per photo without a lot more code hacking. But I've removed the Quick Rating feature. Now, you can only post a rating if you post a comment. That should raise the standard for ratings and responses.
