I think a lot of it because although we don't see one feature of Mum or baby, the photograph has suceeded in capturing the tenderness and security a baby finds in the arms of its mother. Exposure looks great on my monitor also.

I have a total lack of respect for anything connected with society, except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer. Brendan Behan

I think that it is a succesful photograph because you have captured a good moment and it is slightly intriguing as we don't see the features of your subjects as Tom have noted. Ultimately, I could overlook the fact that I am looking at human beings and appreciate the picture for the combination of shapes and the lighting all alone which is something.

Are you sure you are a beginner?? lol

Thank you for your kind words.
I really am a beginner in photography. However, I have had some training in pastels and watercolors, which I think might contribute to the compositions, color, textures, etc. of my work.
I am a stay at home mom and since I don't have a lot of time to devote to the canvas I decided that photography was another way to be creative.

I think that you are teaching some of us old timers something about composition and expression of ideas. All your post have been top notch. With this one you have shown us that you not only can compose a beautibul image you also have a mastery of tone and contrast with a beautiful b&w conversion. Well done and keep up the post I am learning something with each one.

PS: Just for the curious what equipment are you using and how long have you been involved with the photographic process?
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

Art is art, it all connects. Whether it is painting, drawing, music, dancing, sculpture or whatever. Your background certainly is useful here. Keep up the good work.

    Old Timer,
I have been using my husband's Canon G3 and his Minolta 7D. I go back and forth between the two cameras depending on where I'm at and how much I can carry around (with or without baby). I started taking pictures 7 months ago, right after my son was born. My son has been my inspiration.

I like this image a lot also, but I think that a vertical comp with the top of the mothers head included and the intersection of mothers neck and baby's head off center would be worth a try.

Love it, I agree with all that has been said, along with trying a vetical crop just for fun to see what it would look like. Sometimes a different crop makes a great picture even better - sometimes it makes a second great picture that looks entirely different from the first. Great work, keep sharing them with us.
