    The Mole

I noticed this mole cricket in my driveway today and took his photograph using a 90mm macro lens and a 1.4x teleconverter. I'm not sure how much magnification you end up getting with that combination and a D70, but it is something past 1:1. With that, the depth of field isn't much. This was shot at f/10, which sounds weird, but is the result of the macro lens.

He was about an inch long and as big around as a pencil. Anyway, does it work for you?

    Re: The Mole

I don't believe I have ever seen one of these. Are these a regional critter or are they pretty widespread?

Unusual definitely, but of course I'd like to see more DOF just to see the cricket better. It almost looks like a crab? Post more if you have them, this is certainly (for me anyway) an interesting and new insect.

wow, this is one weird looking creature. looking at this picture he looks like a crawdad and a mole combined in one. I like the pic, though!

Got any full length pictures of this insect? I'd like to see the whole thing.

Here's the closest I have to full length. He was kinda stunned and seemed dying, but got active when I started shooting and quickly crawled away. Northern Mole Crickets are found east of the Rockies in the US -- especially in the Southeast. There is apprently a European version, as well. They mostly live underground, so you don't see them much.

    Lava,

Your second one is much stronger in my opinion. The DOF in it doesn't restrict the body, and appears natural as his body approaches the background. I love the colors and a great subject to shoot!

    Nice shots,

    Beautiful insect.
I far prefer the second photo.

You'd probably need f32 and a couple of flashes to get good DoF.
