    Michigan's Western Shore

Here are a few from this weekends rally in Michigan. I'd appreciate your opinions.

Love the pattterns and texture of 1 and 3. I like the contrast between the two leaves in 3, one up one down. You have a real eye for this sort of thing. I really enjoy the way you get the diagonals going in these images. In #2 you got a nice S curve going but the photo as a whole just doesn't have the interest level that the other two are able to generate.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

Chunk, All three are very impressive. As OT said, you have a knack for composing the lines and angles. I like all three, but will differ from OT in that the 2nd is my fav of the bunch. The framing of the lifesaver, the lighting, and the rope bending a twisting in such a way that adds interest to such a simple subject. This is fine work , Chunk.

Thanks for looking and commenting Larry. Here's one just to show that I can line them up foursquare too (as long as there is something else to loosen the composition ).

All great shots, Chunk. I also like the patterns and textures.

This is the part of photography that scares me. I know that I can learn to take a technically correct photo, but the artistic side is going to take a while. I would walk past shots like these for a million years and not see them.

Thanks for helping expand my vision.

Thanks Gary. I noticed some time ago that a lot of the pictures that I like have a strong angular component and I often look for a way to include that in my composition. I'm glad that you think it works.

Thanks Dan. That's quite a compliment, I appreciate it.

A lot of years ago I read an article in a photography magazine that suggested we should "shoot through the cliches" meaning that when confronted with a beautiful scene or setting we should shoot the conventional, standard shots or at least think about them and frame them in our mind. Once they are 'out of the way' we should look at the scene or area with a fresh mind and pay attention to the details that make the scene or area interesting. Many of my favorite shots have come when I've stopped to take a picture of something else and taken one last look around before leaving the area.

Here are some of the more conventional shots I 'got out of the way' before taking each of the shots above. Of course I get a lot of strange looks from folks when I'm standing in a beautiful setting and taking pics of an old bucket or something.

    I don't think #2 stands up in comparison to 1 and 3.
    Those patterns are great !

Thanks Knight, here are a few. The weather was poor at the rally and when it got better we were mostly riding or sitting around shooting the breeze rather than pics.

Really nice images, I especially like the sailboat and the grass on the dune above it.
