    Macro Cactus

A picture I took about 3 weeks ago. Kodachrome 64 film, Tamron 90mm macro lens.

I'm not sure the out of focus right hand side is needed.
Strange, looks like a mouth with teeth !

    Re: Macro Cactus

    GB,

I think this is an interesting shot with lots of potential. I really like the texture of the needles and the blue background works well for me. The first thing I noticed about the picture is that the contrast is a bit high for my taste. If at all possible I would try to boost the mid-tones to try to bring out more detail in the shadows. The second thing I noticed was that the OOF portion on the right side of the frame doesn’t add anything to the picture for me. I think I would have tried to do a vertical crop to eliminate the OOF area. After a bit more study I noticed that the bottom part of the cactus is damaged which detracts from the image some for me.

I hope this is helpful to you,

    Greg

    Re: Macro Cactus

Greg, thanks for the insightful info. I guess I kind of liked the blur of the out-of-frame area on the right, but I suppose that it is distracting. The image is somewhat contrasty. It seems that's more the norm than the exception when shooting slide film in the desert. THanks for pointing out the cactus damage. Many of them have that, but with all them out there I'm sure I can find one or two w/o!

Don and Paul - It is a strange shot.. almost evil. Maybe that's what made me post it. A venus flytrap cactus perhaps? If only there was a bee in that mouth area...

I agree that the righthand part which was out of focus distract the attention of the viewer but maybe you have your own reason to show the contrast. PS would have helped to retouch the damage part but then when you show the actual photo as it was taken is the best way to share.

Yeah I'm not thrilled with the blurry side of the photo either, but I the gruesome mouth of the cactus almost makes up for it.

    Hi GB,
I like the humor in this shot. It appears to be a Martian to me.
