I like the composition and textures but the LCD monitor looses the branches in the dark will look at this tonight on my home PC.

Same here. It's hard to see the upper branches against the dark air, but this may be caused by the settings of my monitor. Anyway, still a good picture.

    Cheers,

    Hi Gary,
I like the compostion and the stern feeling of the pic. However, I find the front rock is too bright and am distracted by it.

    Hi Gary,

While this pic has some appeal to me, I wonder whether a lower viewpoint would not have worked better in this case. Using the wide angle, it would have allowed you to get the complete rock in the FG + the tree while eliminating some of the bushes. A split ND filter might have also helped you tone down the FG hence brightening the sky.

I can see why you where attracted by this scene. It's nice and atemporal ... and works well in BW.

    Cheers,

    Steph.

BTW, which film do you use?

Thanks all for the time to comment. I agree with the rock in the fg being too bright and have since re edited and reduced the blown out appearance. The branches . .some are visible with highlights and others appear as shadow like silhouettes, but all are visible on my monitor and in print.

    Gary,

The tree branches in the top left are dark and merge into the background even with my monitor on full brightness, otherwise I like the composition and agree that the rock would have been nice in its entirity

Would like to see more of the rock as mentioned and some added contrast between the branches and the sky in the top left corner. Picture gives me a longing for solitued and reminded me of the Joshua Tree album by U2 ...

    cheers...

    Re: A Little Tree . . .

Personally, I like the effect of parts of the branches shooting off into the dark, but I do agree that the rock cut off in the fg does not feel right to me. I hope to go back for a reshoot.. Thanks

    Hello Gary,

This is a well composed and very clean shot, I like it. I have no problem at all with your sky. I can clearly distinguish every single branch with my monitor set at 40% of its potential brightness (as it is always set). My only concern is about the rock in the foreground being too bright and hence, acting as a distraction.

I'd be curious to see the effect of Steph suggestions although I personally do not feel a need to reshot from a different angle (a softer light would do I guess).

    regards

    Seb

Thanks for the points input ,Seb Glad you see the little nuances on your screen as I do. I also have brightness at about 40%, gamma at 2.2, and color temperature at 6500. After re editing the image I have the rock at a good exposure with no blowout, but still would have liked the whole rock in there.

Would you happen to work on an Apple system (or at least own an Apple monitor)??.

I was just wondering as I am an Apple man (well I spend quite a lot of time on PC's due to my work...). Graphics works is indeed the field were they are mostly used. I have always found Apple to provide some of the finest monitors on the market but then again, a PC with a high quality monitor and a solid graphic card will do the work.
