Go for a re-shoot, without the parent in the foreground?
    Or does it work?

To me the parent adds to and completes the shot but needs to be in focus, Jeff

Then the shot can't be done at this angle.
It's evening, and there isn't enough ISO to get stopped down to increase the DoF to capture both.

Paul, this was shot at ISO 160. Your camera can't go higher than that and be acceptable? Jeff

Layering two shots has different wave patterns, hard to match up.
Also the oof swan appears larger than one in focus, which means filling in the gap.
I'm jut that good in PS.

At 400mm equivalent on the GH-1 I've tried stopping down and the DoF isn't great at 200mm.
The quality isn't good beyond ISO 3200, though usable at 1600.

I think that they'd still be oof, if I could manage to make the settings.
Click, twiddle, click, twiddle, click, twiddle and those birds would be out of position.
The UI of these micro 4/3/ cameras is slow to make manual settings

I think the parent should be in focus if it means the children are not.

    Re: line astern

It's sort of a funny shot and the out-of-focus momma duck makes it interesting, even if the pic has somewhat limited potential (since most people would view the blurry momma negatively). I like the way the babies are lined up. I don't think it would be as strong w/o her in the photo. Just my opin,
