JW Marriot - yet another architectural attempt

I may or may not have mentioned before, but a club I belong to will have a gallery showing in November, so I'm trying to see how some of my favorites hold up to scrutiny. The theme is "Modern Architecture in S Florida"

The unusual colours work really well on this. Some part of the building seems to be without colour and I'm wondering if this is due to your treatment. The satellite looking thingy (crane?) at the top is an excellent feature of a very good shot.

Jim, my first thought was,"things are looking up.."
Then I notice the blue building and aqua sky.
Since I don't consider myself qualified to Critique photographs all I can say is I like the shot.

jetrim I like the idea alot. The angle works well and the crane is a huge plus. I am not sure about the color of the sky though. It looks as if you pushed the hue or someting. Also the clouds maybe a touch blown out for a print. But this is one of your better ones. I think an HDR processing would work well here. Kind of a Draymorton processing kind of thing.

Cool shot, Jetrim. I agree with Greg on the HDR processing.
I keep going back and forth on whether I'd like the top of building to be level...

I appreciate your comment, but seriously - you are as qualified to critique as anyone else here, and don't ever worry about hurting my feelings if you see something you don't like. I have really thick skin

Very strange, unless the server went down. the link goes here: http://photosfromparadise.com/ and worked when I tried it just before responding to this

    Greg & cm_mtb,
yep I pushed the colors, but in the opposite direction than what you're thinking.

I did go back and double check the sky as it is quite light due to the type of clouds present. According to the histogram, less than 2.4% of the sky area has a value higher than 250 and 0.8% holds a value of 254 or 255 so from a technical perspective, it's not as blown out as our eyes (mine included) perceive.

As for doing a "Dray Morton" type of processing, if I could figure out what the hell he does to make his shots look so good, I'd have been doing it for a long time now

Here's the original, totally unedited except for resize:

Jetrim - interesting concept, but the composition feels a little static (to me anyway). I'm wondering how this would look with a tilt such that the crane spans from one corner almost to the opposite. Does that make sense?

jetrim, could you run through your pp adjustments? (interested in what you did with colors, not Orton) you did a great job on it compared to the original. If it's bad etiquette to ask about that then nevermind

    Not a big deal

    1. straighten
    2. duplicate layer
    3. background layer - convert to B&W w/ red filter, then clarify (strength 4.4)
    4. top layer - set blend mode to "multiply", blur, then erase bottom of crane to reveal extra detail in B&W layer
    5. merge all (flatten layers)
    6. (in PSP this all falls under one "smart fix" interface) set white and black point, adjust highlights & shadows, brighten, adjust overall sharpness (saturation was untouched)
    7. High pass sharpen (radius 74 / strength 42 / blend mode "overlay"
    8. save, resize and save again (under new name)

jetrim, on the photo in the first post, how about just a different sky all together. Someone with a little more Photoshop skills could do a better job but this is my attempt to make the sky more acceptable, Jeff
