    Just a peek...

I bought a book of photographs by Robert Doisneau a couple of weeks ago - wish I had his eye. Anyway, one which I particularly love is called "Sidelong Glance", and is very easy to find on the web if you don't already know it.

I grabbed the shot below as a rather poor homage, so my sincere apologies to M. Doisneau!

Nice shot and almost a voyeuristic feeling. A quirky little situation to be caught in My one suggestion would be try possibly cropping the pole off the right, it may help, but I was split when I tried it.

    Nice shooting,

Matt, I like this shot. You framed it well , I think, and captured the right moment. . .the man glancing in the window as he walks by and the sign in perfect view. I only feel it is a bit too dark and contrasty. . .but it still works. Leave it as it is Good work

I like this shot a lot, it tells a great story. My only niggle, is that my eyes keep following the two guys top left out of the picture. I don't know if they weren't there whether the shot would look better or not, but they keep drawing my attention.

    Nice work.

Great shot Matt, looking at the mans feet, he's just about stopped walking. I see a camera on the post which to me adds a big brother element..hmm, how did you get that vantage point Matt? The people walking in and walking out (of the frame) also add interest.

    Re: Just a peek...

Thanks for the comments guys. You've picked up some of the same things I was wondering, like whether the other people are distracting, or whether the contrast is right. As there seems to be a range of opinion I think I'll leave it as is for the moment.

Mark - as for the vantage point, I had just been browsing photography books on the second floor of a Borders bookshop on Charing Cross Road. I was standing watching the world go by below when I thought of this. I didn't hang around taking shots there for very long though, the security guard was giving me slightly strange looks!

    Thanks again

I like the voyeuristic feeling of this. After seeing the image "Sidelong Glance", I have to say that this is a fitting modern tribute to it.

    Hi Matt,
Nice capture. I like the shot a lot. Just a few suggestions: 1. the pole on the right is a bit distracting, I think another angle may avoid it; 2. If the 2 men on the left were replaced with a woman, I think the image would have a deeper meaning. Just my opinion.

    Re: Just a peek...

Yoyo - you are quite right, in an ideal world it would have been a man and a woman arm in arm with just the guy looking, but unless I faked it I could end up waiting a long time with my camera poised for that "decisive moment". In the meantime I have a feeling security would politely ask me to stop spying on members of the public and leave the store!

I suppose going that extra mile (or just getting really lucky) is what sets apart the really great photographers though.

    Thanks

    Hi Matt,
I thought you were on a bridge at the time of shooting. As you were in a store, I understand the difficulties.

Regardless of what may detract from the photo, you could not have hired a model to fit the scene as perfectly as this gentleman. Great shot!
