    Kate in the Paper Room

We were exploring an abandoned building where we work and I managed to snap this one. Tri-X 400, aperature fairly wide, I think about 1/125th. Seriously, I don't know how anyone remembers if they don't have a digital cam. And I'm not about to go there. The shot was printed with a sloppy border and I kept that after the scan.

Interesting locale lending itself to a very nice candid of your photographer friend. You've captured the lighting well - though I would have been tempted to fix the perspective lines a bit...

    Nice job.

I like this shot and your choice to have it bright. I think having her in the center here works OK, but I would have probably moved her off center and have her backed by an expanse of blank wall rather than the corner. While you would lose that line leading to the subject I think it has a little of that 'telephone pole coming out of the head' feeling now. Like I said that's just my preferences and I think it's very good now. I think the formality of the symmetrical shot works well as a counter point to the chaos present in the scene.

Great shot. I love how there's alot of paper in the foreground, and she's in the midground. Great touch. The centredness is an interesting shot, but I think it works with the two symmetrical windows.

Nice shot and what a great subject to shoot,

Re: Kate in the Paper Room

I really like this photo. The long, smooth tonal scale of Tri-X is something to behold. Reminds me that I should go out and shoot some. In some ways, I like Tri-X alot better than TMax. Soft grays, and long scale. Anyways, on to the photo. Enough of my rambling ...

The windows are a bit blown, but you can't really avoid that with this type of photo . I like the pose (if it is a pose), the downward tilted head, the cluttered floor. Even though she is almost dead center, it works. I just wish it wasn't so tall. I can't see all of it at once on this screen. Great job!

Wonderful room and a memorable picture, but the composition seems rather straight-forward. Did you try anything without her in the middle of the frame shooting down from your standing height?

    Hi,
The surroundings are very effective in this photo. The texture on the wall, the paper, and the lighting arouse a lot of curiosity. I dont understand why the girl was smiling. Did she find a treasure map?

Thanks for the kind words! I intentionally put her in the center of the composition for this one. It just seemed to feel more cinematic at that moment. I didn't actually set up for this one at all. She was sitting there for a moment, and from where I stood, I was right in line with her and where all the perspective lines in the room converged. It just seemed to work right and I quick snapped it while she was distracted with talking to the third person in our group of trespassers. My feeling at that moment was that an off-center composition would have detracted from the uniqueness of that moment.
And since I wouldn't want to be accused of breaking any photographic rules regarding thirds, let's just say I put her in the CENTER third....

    Thanks to everyone for commenting!

Good stuff! It's like she's stranded in a see of paper with only her trusty camera and chair.

Re: Kate in the Paper Room

I think I would have preferred the girl to be not there at all or standing up with her back to the camera looking out the window. This photo should be about paper, paper on the floor and perhaps paper that may be missing from the walls and have Kate as added interest only.
But I still like it very much.
