    Humming Bird Don't Fly Away

Does one freeze the wings or not? I took this photo this morning about 6:30. Shutter was 320 and aperature f3.5. Photo has been cropped.

A good shot, but a little dull. I've found that when shooting hummingbirds, flash can really make the picture. Since most hummingbirds have iridescent feathers, the reflection can really make for a great shot. To answer your question about freezing the wings, I think maybe a tad faster shutter speed would yield a good result, a little bit of blur is good to accentuate the motion. Good shot though.

well ... most GREAT images one sees of hummingbirds were shot with MULTI FLASH setups. costly and unneccesary if you ask me ;)

to freeze the wing movement you'd need 1/2000TH or so

I think images with ANY AMOUNT of wing blur CAN and WILL work IF the body/ head is still sharp

Dan mentioned the gorget of the males being colorful and needing flash to accent this......

direct sunlight at a good angle will do the same if no flash is available

    keep shooting!!!!
