    Re: Cathedral

Hmmm... Interesting shot. I'm split on the branches on this one. The good thing is that the branches cover the whole picture, yet on some of the branches, I believe it interferes with the cathedral just a tad too much, making it overall a little busy!

Just my thoughts though and I do love it in black and white,

    Hi,
I feel the shot delivers an insight. It sends a message that the church (religion) is separated (fenced) from the rest (the world) or the church is not budding (branches without leaves). It is a good photo to supplement an essay like that.
    All the best.

    Re: Cathedral

Gives me a feeling of abandonment (sp?) and secrecy, a warning against coming any closer yet still being drawn in. First thing I thought of is a cinderella type story...

I like these screening type shots. I've done them myself.
This one works well for me.
All sorts of meaning can be read into it. The fact that none of the branches are overly thick - no trunks - gives it a lacy effect.

    Re: Cathedral

Nothing exciting? I think I disagree. I am often jealous of other photographers that see things I don't...even though I know that everyone sees things differently.

As Yoyo saw fit to allude to religious barriers I also felt this…although, in my own way. We place those barriers, as you have placed those winter branches, between ourselves by choice, by questions, by intellect, by doubt. You do feel like you want to break free of the branches and see the cathedral in its glory, yet we sit and gaze through the cold branches of self-made realities…where is the knight who will save us from our own inhibitions? (For Paul, I think its Sleeping Beauty…Prince Charming fights the brambles and dragon to save the sleeping Aurora from the evil Maleficent aka. dragon.) Lala!

But, once again I digress, (whoa, there’s a news flash!) I actually very much enjoyed looking at this. The branches do not distract me. I find it a very solemn portrayal, but like it all the same.

I posted a photo like this earlier (My Theme), only I had shadows on the church, not branches. You have done a nice job with this photo, but it seems to me that it is not very sharp. It would be nice if the church were sharper. A very nice idea. You seemed to have pulled off what I couldn't with mine.

Very well said. Regardless of religious or background, we can all find some meaning in this pic.

Its probably the compressed image plus the effect a film scanner has on the image.
My 4x6 proof is sharp enough to make out the individual bricks of the building. At first I thought it wasnt sharp too, but I found out its because of the branches. The branches are slightly off focus because they are closer, making the whole image seem out of focus. Kind of a neat optical illusion actually.

Thanks for your comments everyone. I'm especially proud of this shot because I did not use a light meter. Although, I did use colour film and grey scaled the whole thing. Guess I'm guilty of the technology afterall.

    Re: Cathedral

I've never seen a photo like there where I actually felt the annoying trees coming in from random sides of the frame were helping. I actually think they are making this an interesting and unique photo. Good work with breaking the rules!
