    Re: Haircut

Another nice one, Greg. B/w working, lots of interesting detail to attract my eye such as the open mail box, the fallen bicycle, the monitor. I know I'll be looking at it more.
The pole only adds in my opinion. The bottom is a slight problem. I don't think it wise to crop it further and would like to see more space if you cropped it at all.

Is the guy cutting his own hair...can't tell for sure?

    Re: Haircut

Very well done, Greg. The crop on the bottom is a bit tight, but not going to hurt it. The pole does not block anything nor does it cut the image in half. It had to be there and it's in a good spot and part of the scene. A non issue for me.
Great tones, subject. . .everything. Classic

Nice shot Greg. You nailed the exposure with excellent DOF. Great tones and details. You can almost differentiate color among the elements.
Please ask to edit photos and I'll do the same!

I would like to see how a little more on the bottom effects the picture, and as far as the pole it belongs there to me, Jeff

Great capture, I agree the pole is fine.

I love what appears to be a PC monitor (or maybe a box) on the lawn, the window fan is great too.
Please ask before editing my photos, I'll say yes

I like to take the pictures...

Thanks Rick, Granpaw, Dumpy. I do recall cropping the bottom and have some extra there if I need to go back. I will play around with it some more.

    Re: Haircut

Lots of feeling in this shot, contary to what others are saying and yourself I think you should leave it the way it is. A crop would throw off the composition a bit too much. The road gives us a sense of where this is - way out in the country in the woods or in a rural town?

Without the road as knowledge that this area is somewhere near civilization then that idea is lost. Also, it gives a subtle hint to direction (or lack of, since so less of the road is shown and it is an uneven amount that is). That works a little on my psychology

The second crop towards the pole; I think you should leave that in, too. If you were to cut it it would misdirect the depth of the house and we, again, lose insight to where exactly this is, let alone key things like "How big is that house he's in? Why is he unhappy if he has a big house?(lol) Where is he?"

Something so minute can be the key to making the photo - for some people - for me it's that old fashioned fan at the back of the house. I'm not sure what it does but you don't see them anymore and it's a symbol on its own. A fan that is unmoving, blowing inwards (feng shui), also a form of junk - like the stuff that litters around the house. I also notice there is another fan on the outside porch- why does he need two fans? Maybe the one inside is busted, like the cooling mechanism inside himself (the man on the porch).

Like I said the most little of details could go on for paragraphs for points in creating symbolism.

    Re: Haircut

I agree that it would be better without the pole there, but looking beyond that I think it's a pretty interesting subject and scene. The fellow might be cutting his hair but I find that aspect so small that it is hard to lock onto. In general, there is a lot happening. This might be one of those pix that looks best very big.

I see what you mean about the bottom street btw. I wish it were a dirt road. I bit be inclined to crop it out. Btw, you COULD clone out that pole.. Might not be that hard to do either.

    Re: Haircut

Thanks GB. I do agree I could remove the pole. But sometimes I get to thinking how well my images will hold up years down the road. Thirty or fifty years from now. Cloneing cars poles and other things that years from now might actually date and improve an image down the road. Todays distractions might turn out to be something that would improve a shot later. I hope my rambling makes since. What someone said here before? It is what it is.

    Re: Haircut

I'd just like to say again I love this photo..and I just actually noticed he was cutting his hair. To me, I don't see that, but to each his or her own pictures hold different meanings per different people. To me, this picture reminds me of being dead broke off my arse and slumping down on the front porch thinking of what to do next and how to make the next meal. That's what this photo says to me, because I've had a personal experience in that. I agree with GB i think the haircut does have to be made more obvious. I think what did it for me was the man's pose - he seems to be clasping his hands in prayer of some kind. I totally did NOT see the razer there.

    Re: Haircut

I do have to agree that it is difficult to tell he is cutting his own hair and would never be known without the title. I looked at the biggest image in your gallery and still can't really tell.
Perhaps with a larger image it is more obvious.
If it is obvious when big then the title fits. If not perhaps a re-title but that might take some work with his hands...don't know.
Whatever its still my fav recent image.

    Re: Haircut

Thanks again Kajuah, Thanks Frog. I know it is hard to see but yes he is cutting his hair. You can clearly see it when enlarged in PPing.
