Get Out When It Rains

[Coastal Flyer]

Stormy San Diego. It doesn't happen very often so I took advantage of the unique photo opportunities. I have four shots taken from today as the storm passed.

Another series of beautiful pics...

However, it is not fair to have the 2nd here the colors of the others take over, and take away from what i would have seen seperately as quite an interesting image...

In any case, my only issue is with the 4th, which in matters of comp and colors is very well executed, however, i feel that the focus is on a stem rather than on the Red portion....which i would have preferred...

Thanks very much for the comments so quickly. I debated with myself whether to post #2 in this series but it was suggested to me in the Public Art series that when the shots go together, post them together. So.... I can only hope people look at all four shots.

I was trying for the rain drops in the red flower photo. Try as I may, I think you may be correct.

Great shots!! The first two are absolutely amazing!!!

The yellow flower I could see being a little bit more interesting from a different angle instead of straight on dead center.

The last one is nice, but just a little too busy for me.

Thanks so much for your comments. I tried different angles with the Black Eyed Susan but none show the rain drops. You are correct with shot #4, but it was intended to be that way, but I know what you are saying.

I like the flowers (but then I almost always like flowers) not much to say there. The beach and sky shot doesn't do much for me as there isn't enough to see there.

IMHO the winner here is the pier and reflection shot. I think the color and exposure are just exactly right, about the only change I might make would be to crop off the bottom 10-15% to make it more of a panoramic and to strengthen the pier part of the image.

The first shot would have really, really, benefitted from a graduated neutral density filter. You would have got more light and detail into the foreground which would have given more depth to your photo and make it less centred.

The second one is great with perfect exposure, lighting, colours and tones. It is unfortunate that the shadow is a little darker on the right but not everything is controllable.

The flower shots also have great colour and focus. The problem with the red one is that it is rather "crowded" and difficult I am sure to isolate one or two branches with buds and water droplets to produce a main centre of focus. A software effects filter might enhance the red shot.

I'd try cropping so that the three reflections in the center left of the image are still entirely there and just a bit of the reflection on the far right remains. I think that would make the pier the center of attention.

I commented on a a couple of these in the gallery, but let me say here that these are terrific. I agree that the first has some issues with the bright area but the water is so beautiful that I tend to forgive that. The second is my favorite and seems to have all the elements in harmony. I understand why you went with the straight on perspective in the third but still think it is the weakest of the four images suffering from the dead center syndrome. As for the forth image it is beautifully exposed and the rain drops are magnificent, but I feel like it is a natural horizontal forced to live in a vertical formate. Wonderful outing in the rain with terrific results to show for it.

CF - I thought this was a terrific series, especially No 2. That would look good printed big and hung up!

A lovely selection CF but I think the second one is outstanding. The light on the timber supports above the water level is especially nice

Nice work. Numbers 2 and 3 are the best of the series, with 2 being a stand out, beautiful light and well exposed. 1 is a little too close to a silhouette without actually being one a ND grad would have improved the foreground. 4 is just a little to busy for me, maybe even less DOF isolating just a few of the buds....BUDS! man we're supposed to get 6-8" of snow today with the mountains expecting 18"! No buds here for at least a couple of months.

Thanks very much for the comments. I really appreciate the suggestions. Regarding #1, I took several shots bracketing the exposier, with polarizer, without. While I understand your suggestions regarding a silhouette of the pier, I am so glad to see you make that comment as I was hoping to get the feeling. Someday I need to get a ND filter.

Old Timer, I did see your comments from the Gallery and especially appreciate you taking the time to add comments again in the Critque Forum. I think I need to invest in a ND filter. The consensus is overwhelming.

CF - I preach getting out in bad weather and shooting but haven't done it in awhile. Maybe we'll get hit with another long rainstorm and I'll get another chance.

The shots are great. They seem to work good together also. I personally like the bottom one the best, just seems elegant. Watch that slight tilt of the horizon on the top shot (unless it's my imagination). Also glad to see you got the yellow flower sharp. Macro shots that aren't sharp are just painful to me ...

I agree with Ron with #1, I feel it needs more detail in the foreground and also another element would have helped. Someone walking on the beach.
I really like #2 best, I like the composition on it a lot and also like the colors and feel you nailed the exposure.

Wow, #2 is PERFECT. I have a feeling when I get my digital camera next week that the photos I take are not going to look like that . Oh, and I'm sorry, but I honestly like #4. I didn't think it was a question as to what was the focus of the picture. The droplets, of course!
