    Fire Hydrant. . . B&W

This is an old fire hydrant near a field with grass and weeds growing around it. It looks to have been out of use for a long time. It just struck me standing there alone , and liked the old and weathered look about it. Shot with a tamron 28-75 di at about40 mm with polarizer, tripod, fuji superia 200. Converted to b&w in Jasc paint shop pro 8. Scanned with a minolta dimage dual scan lll film scanner. . .as I do with all my negs. ( just in case anyone could use to benefit from knowing some of the technicals )
I think it came off ok, but wondering what others feel, subject strong enough, point of view ok?, lighting? Comments appreciated . .

I like the lighting, and the strong contrast of the image. It would be interesting to see the difference in quality of the image if it had a long depth of field. Also interesting would be a point of view much lower than this one. I think that the image is of high quality though overall. Nice.

Hi Gahspidy... I think this picture works well, if I am not wrong you were interested in showing the texture on the hydrant, and this picture brings it out. Maybe there is a technique (in photoshop), or through taking the picture (would light from a different direction have caused it to be more visible?) that would work better... but as it is, I still like it
Opinions I got lots, expertise none!! Hmm… except for giving opinions!!

    Thanks all for the comments.
Yes, i was going for the texture and some detail, but mostly was going for the shape and character that this hydrant seemed to have standing tall out from the grass. And just basically wanted to bring it out as a subject for one to view . Mostly they go unnoticed, and yet they are all over, especially in the city, and they all seem to have their own unique charm about them, whether it be from age or style, color, location. The way this one has its top bent and one cap missing, sort of had an appeal that I liked.
    Anyway, thanks for your time

I also like pictures of objects that somehow appear lonely and defiant at the same time, as if the object is determined to survive. I see that in your photo in the age and position of the object. I think it is very nicely done.

Another nice composition, Gary. What I like most about this shot is the texture brought out by the B&W, and the interesting shape of the hydrant with its hollow tubes and leaning top. I also like the way you've softened the background enough to provide a contrast point but not so much that we can't tell what's back there. You're going to have quite an "album" by the time 2004 is done I think.

I hope there's not a fire near that one.

NIce shot with a very strong feeling of depth due to there being nothing in the middle ground. The hydrandt really pops.

In regards to your comment about liking how I described the fire hydrant, I have a tendency to "personalize" objects.
