    The Fence

Taken out at the Grand Canyon in December, this is a five image HDR with a bit of an effect thrown in, and conversion to B&W.

Great lines and curves. Nice contrast of manmade vs nature. The sky is great. The bg and fg are spot on. I'm just wondering if the centering of the basket like fence throws focus into not the best area of the shot.

First word that came out of my mouth was. WOW. What a great scene, love the curvature of the frence. that makes the shot. my only nitpick would be the middle of the shot looks a bit brighter than it should be, other than that. wonderful!

    Re: The Fence

Thanks everyone. I was a bit concerned about the way the fence is centered, but it's obvious that it's the subject, and trying to offset it would probably make it seem contrived. Nobody mentioned the one thing I really don't like about it - the way the middle background mountain is almost at the same height as the distant mountains. I wish it was either higher or lower.

Arne, see my above comment on the centering. It's tough to know when to center or not; I think it just looks right.

Liban, that's HDR for you. But I think those blown out clouds are actually the brightest point. Alas, it's all weird with HDR.

    Armando, Jet, thanks too.

    Re: The Fence

GB I really like the foreground but think the mountains needs a little something more. More tonal range or something? I think if you could have gotten a little higher it might have helped too. Still just a nit pick and I would like to see a color version. Your HDR technique is very strong. I like the sharpness you are getting.
If you have and IPad or IPhone there are some nice Photoshop Podcast available for HDR techniques. But you are on a nice track as is.

I now realize that I should have taken notice of your title. It does change my perspective.

    Re: The Fence

Greg, I wish I could have gotten higher, don't think it was possible there. I agree that the mountains' tonal ranges seem a little weird here, I guess HDR does its own thing. Maybe I can adjust them (I just don't know how... perhaps mask them off and increase contrast..). The color version stinks IMO, hence why I converted to B&W. If you really want I can post it. I don't have an Apple product btw, but it's great that they have a little community on HDR work. I've seen some excellent stuff out there.

Yeah Arne, this one's all about the fence.

    Thanks too Dray.

    Hey GB,

What I do sometimes for the HDRs that will allow you to selectively change the HDR look from area to area in your photograph. I generate an HDR that has great skies for example. then Generate another HDR that has a great foreground then just mask them in photoshop. THis is like bracketting HDR shots. lol. HDRing HDRs. This should be callded HDR^2 (squared)

Not a bad idea Liban. I will try that! Not sure it will work on this one though, as the mountains show throw the fence. This is just one of those gritty, old western looking pix that looks both interesting and repulsive at the same time (lol) ... sort of the photography I gravitate towards when out in the desert.
