    Talking Faux Velvia

    Dear Phriends,

I apologize in advance for any bruised egos connected with this picutre . It is my attempt at producing a Velvia-like photograph with digital manipulation. I don't have Photoshop either . Tell me what you think.

    Re: Faux Velvia

This photo's not too bad. (of course, I'm not an expert, either.)
I think it would work better if there wasn't so much going on in the background. I didn't immediately realize what you were trying to convey until I read the title of your post.
It's almost like it needs something to draw your eye it the right direction to complete the madonna-like figure.
Nice idea, though, I've always loved sunflowers and wouldn't have thought of this concept.

    Cheers, Chuck

    Re: Faux Velvia

    Dear Chuck,

This photo was actually kind of a joke on my part . I wanted to kind of fake Velvia in a way, but I knew I wouldn't get great results, but enough to give an idea.

Actually the large sunflower in the background that is leaning over the little one is supposed to be the Madonna, the little one is the child. Just to explain. Thanks for the comments.

I really am interested in everyone's opinion of this, especially those who actually shoot Velvia.

    Re: Faux Velvia

    Well, Dz,

I shoot Velvia almost exclusively and your image doesn't bear a resemblance to the Velvia that *I* know. That's not to say that others have experiences similar to this, but this shot does not display the qualities of Velvia as I know them.

Velvia - and almost all Fuji films - lean towards the cooler end of the color spectrum. Emphasised are blues and greens, receeding are yellows and reds. This image is strong in the yellows which is atypical of Fuji Velvia. Your image is very flat in the contrast department, Velvia - as most slide films - is very contrasty. It is also vitually grainless, which is not a quality this image portrays.

I dunno man I would go out and shoot a roll or two of Velvia in a variety of situations and see how it performs. I love this film, I think it is the best thing out there for landscape and nature shots - like the one you've posted here. I'd give it a run - then begin making up a way to match your results using digital technique.

    Best of luck.

    Re: Faux Velvia

Sorry dude, but not even close.
I've probably shot three hundred plus rolls of Velvia in my film days. It's still my favorite slide film (although I'm digital these days) followed closely by Provia 100F and Agfachrome RSX 50. If you really want an easy quickfix go to fredmiranda.com and download his Velviavision plug-in for photoshop. It's 20 bucks, but it makes it simple for us velvia fans gone digital.

    Dear Phriends,

All I did, was up the green in the picture. I do not have PS, so it all is very crude. Do not fear Rick, I shall soon shoot a roll of the real thing. Don't worry .

    Re: Faux Velvia

I will have to go with Lionheart and Rick on this: not even close! Boosting the green will not do it. Rick is dead on the money with his description of Velvia: high contrast, shift in cooler tones. In your pic, the sky is way too green. It should be blue, deep blue!

Anyway, I (kind of) remember that the S3 has a special Velvia profile to it. Nobody seems to be mentioning this, but I find a digital body able to 'express' different slide color profiles to be very attractive....

Here is a sunflower pic taken on Velvia (no PS correction - maybe just sharpening) for comparison. It lacks the great composition of your 'Madonna and child', but I think it is interesting to see for the colors. It was taken around 3.00 pm during a summer day without any clouds in the sky (hence rather cool temperatures).

    Cheers,

    Steph.
