Nice pics. How did you set the flash and lens? I haven't gotten results this good yet with my D70 and SB800 flash.

400mm, F10, aperture priority mode, flash just on ETTL and let it do the work for 1 & 2
Experimented a bit with moving to change the background and exposing for silhouette.

I find the 1/250 limit on flash speed a problem for candid shots of drivers, but got away with it here.

I'll have to try 1/250. I've used auto with the default of 1/60 and it always blasts out two much, even if I turn it down by two stops. Thanks.

I set the Custom Function on the 20D to default to 1/250 in A mode, so that I can control the background exposure by setting the aperture.

I wish I'd reset from 800iso down to 100 when using the flash, the noise is annoying to me.
But I started out getting some shots in the bank before leaving the insect sitting there and walking back to the coach for the flash.
Just forgot (doh!) to reset when I had the flash.

These are quite spectacular, and I'm really jealous! Dragonflies are one of my favorite things to photograph these days. That first pic is almost comical because he looks like he's posing for you, with his head cocked a little.

I'm with you. Still struggling with the combo to get consistant results on closeups.

Paul, some very nice shots here.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??
