    Cross Town Traffic

Staying on the board sailing series in that the season is just starting for me. I shot this at the end of the session. I had to use a polarizer in that I'm facing the early evening sun. I'm new to using a polarizer, but it's amazing how it cuts the white glare/reflection.

Thanks in advance for comments and suggestions,
    Tim

Looks like you used the polarizer on the bottom as the water and sails have color and the sky no color and blown out but saved by the great cloud. i like the scene, and still find this a pleasing image although it appears to be overexposed somewhat.

    Re: Cross Town Traffic

    Hi Gary,

Thanks for the review. The sky has no color because it is all cloud (high and low). It was a tough exposure in that I was shooting into the sun's direction. Ergo, into a very brightly diffused light. To my eye, that water would have been near as white as the cloud with the glare. I was amazed at how the polarizer cut the glare.

As far as the overexposure, I did brighten the scene just a tad (not much as I recall). The individuals and the bg cliff were a bit darker. Do you think this would help? Or, should I shelve it. I'll have plenty of other opportunities to reshoot these (and hopefully with a longer lens).

    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

    Tim,

Crop out the sky to the line of the mountain on the right and you got a great shot. The colors are great and a nice, well composed shot.

    Nice shooting,

    Jared

    The Bigger Picture

This is a shot from higher up (Hood River Bridge) that shows the light that I was shooting into. It is a different location, but I believe that water would have had color if I had the polarizer on.

FWIW, it is typically the windiest just down wind of the cloud line in the Colombia Gorge -- because he clouds are dissipating as they heat up. The Gorge is like a Venturi and just accelerates the wind. People come here from all over the world to sail. The most important part of the weather forecast is where the cloud line will be -- and when.

Just a of interest. Not really submitting this for a critique..
    Cheers,
    Tim

p.s. Thanks for the good idea Jared. For some reason, I try and keep to the golden ratio with my crops (makes good 4x6, 8x12, or 10x15 prints). It's also full frame. I have not yet got creative with other crops. But, I think your idea would work. I'll take a look at it. I also think your idea would work with the kite boarder shot. The cliff line would also then make a nice diagonal.

    Re: The Bigger Picture

    Tim,

No problem about the idea. I know the feeling about hating to crop pictures and, personally, I don't really enjoy cropping them. But after seeing how much they can help a picture, it's truly a good thing to learn how to and what to keep/not to keep.

    Nice shots,

    Jared
