I think this works fine, Greg. I do miss the person inside however.

Looks sharp but I'd like to see a person, too.
Your coin laundrys are a lot cleaner looking than ours but it gives me an idea for a subject.
Does anyone else call them launderettes like my Texas friend does?

EDIT Here they are called laundro-mats. No idea why.

Greg - you almost have a monopoly here in small town Americana! I was thinking about the images you have posted over the few years I have been here - you have quite a collection of breakfast places, bridges, civic buildings, etc. You are a chronicler of the times, at least in your little corner of the vineyard!

Personally, the ones I like the most are those, like this one, which could be found nowhere else. I like this a lot, and don't think the absence of a person is a detriment. The lighting is beautiful and subtle and I love the Coke machine in the corner. Even the tree in the background is symmetrical! (tell the truth - did you prune it just for the picture? )

    Cheers

I saved post number 1000 just for you Greg, here it goes.

    Greg,
I agree with Didache, you almost have a monopoly on small town America. You have taken something as simple as a coin laundry and make people look at it in a different way. I like the lighting, the time of day you picked I think is darn near perfect. The subject is something I would have a hard time making appealing but you made it so. I don't speak out much here anymore but I always make time to view the forum and see who is doing what and you coin laundry shot is worth my 1000th post.

    Great shot.

    Greg,

I think this one is better than the other one in every way, except for the missing person. Even with out the person, I like this one better. I like the trees at the top and this one is definitely cleaner and sharper. The lighting is perfect to provide just enough illumination outside while still letting the inside stand out. Great job!

    Frog,

I grew up in Texas and I've never heard them called launderettes...only laundro-mats. It's a big state though.

Gary, Paul, Frog. It is real hard to catch someone in here without a car setting in front. I pass this everyday on my way to work. If there is ever anyone in there you can bet I will have my camera with me.
    Thanks Paul.
Mike, Tyson thanks for the high praise. I am glad it works for you. I would give anything if there had been a Pepsi machine on the other side of the building. I have been looking for a Pepsi and Coke machine together in an interesting location for a long time. LOL

I get a Hopper's Nighthawk feel from the building. I like it. A couple of people either inside or on the benches outside would add a bit, but I don't see them as a necessity.

This looks great. The composition and perspective are spot-on, which, I think, is necessary for a shot like this.

Like others have said, the absence of that dude is not a detriment. I do wish there was something tangible telling us the place was open. That would enhance the deserted feeling. One of the front doors open, one of the laundry machine doors open, a basket of clothes. But those are all out of your control unless you placed stuff yourself, which would probably be lame. Given what you had to work with, I love it.

The simplicity of the "coin laundry" sign is almost haunting.

Greg - I think this and the burger joint shot could be used in a nice book one of these days. They have quite a throwback feeling to them.
