    Car Parts - Add yours

PunkJunkey's nice old car shot and some of the responses inspired me to dig up this old shot that I took on Tri-X back in the 80s.

Any critique is welcome. Add your own car detail shots if you like.

Good thread Chunk. Now that's more than a classic, its a dinosaur. It's weird when you think that it was considered modern at one time. Also that they had to lift the lid off those little lamps and light them. So you're driving down the road with oil lamps. lol I like the angle you chose because it just gives a hint of the cars personality instead of the whole thing. I love how that front light looks and in general all the shapes in the photo are appealing. I shoot vintage cars all the time but neve tried in b & w, it really adds to the look of that era. In fact, it makes the shot.

Here's one I took night before last, I forgot to note the make of the car..doh!

I like it. It's funny how square it is compared to this, more modern, car:

    Sharing Photos

    Chunk-
If you want to start a sharing thread, you should do it on the ViewFInder forum. This is the only board that I want to be pretty rigid about. If we aren't kinda uptight about keeping this forum about critiquing, it could quickly spiral out of control. The car parts thread is a great idea, though. Maybe you could redo it on ViewFinder?

That said, I owe you a critique now

I like the old, chitty-chitty bang-bang feel of this image. But I feel like it's sort of conceptually vague. I want itto be either tighter or looser. I want to see more car, or focus on one detail. This one is teasing me, and not in such a good way. It's sort of frustrating. Especially that little glimpse of grill. I keep looking at the headlamp and thinking I want to just see a closeup of it. Or the whole car.

I think this is a suggestive photo. It's a good sketch from which to start exploring the old car. But it seems like you weren't really sure what you wanted to shoot. It feels like the first shot. I'm thinking the 25th one might have started to get good. That's what happens for me a lot of the time.

Hope that critique is useful. And thanks for understanding about the car parts thread idea. It is a good idea and I hope you'll try it on the ViewFinder forum. And if people post them here anyway, I guess we'll survive

That bug is cute! What year is it? I've had two bugs and I'd love to have one of the new ones.
    They rule. Nice shot.

Yeah, they'd be a little different in the wind tunnel wouldn't they. I really like your shot. That little sunburst on the chrome is perfect.

Sorry John, I guess I should have thought it through better. I just happened get the idea from punkJunkey's post here. You are right of course. I'll restart it on VF tomorrow.

With regaurd to your critique, I have often wished that I had included about half or a little more of the radiator with this for much the same reason you stated...and then sometimes I think I like the mistery a little more. I do like the repeated shape of the radiator and the back of the hood as well as the angled brace that lets the eye slide back and forth between the lights. I also like the leather strap that hasn't been on any production car lately. Thanks for the critique.

That makes me homesick for my own past bugs, but I won't be in the middle of winter!

The bug is a 1960, one of the first made partially in australia. I love to cruze around in it in summer, but come winter........

I love all the shots, the way they show the main character ofthe car, this is a good topic.

This is the car i use when the weather is cold and dreary. Like it is quite often here in melbourne.

I took a B&W photography class (or three) a few years ago. Myself and two other classmates went on a little outing one day. An old overgrown logging road led us to this wreck. Took it with my reliable ol' EOS 650 and its ever-present partner, the non-USM 28-70 3.5/4.5 II. What a great pair... ahh, memories... Shot on 100 T-Max hand-held @ 1/2 second. Never could figure out what kind of car, but this is the front end, and they don't put drum brakes in the front anymore. So I'm assuming it's old. The grill was surprisingly clean... I've been meaning to go back and get it...

    Kelly, Jezz, and Outdoorsman

Thanks for posting. I like the reflections of the cars' surroundings and how they give form to the cars. The wreck on the logging road is neat. You have to really look to make sure it's a car.

At PJ's request I've restarted this thread on the Viewfinder forum where I should have started it in the first place. Please join over ther if you like.

I was writing a suggestion like that until I noticed your post. But what about the other way around? A few times I've seen pictures beining critiqued that actually belong in this forum, heck sometimes they are critiqued/posted in both forums... kinda confusing don't you think?

yeah Chunk, that is an old one. It was probably driven alongside horse and carriage for some time. I would agree with John's comments though. I want to see more of the car or focus in on a specific detail.
