Very nice indeed. It is very easy on the eye with nice bands of colours and lovely contrasts. The surf looks great and the gulls stand out nicely against the blue sky. The light on the boy is good and I'm glad he wasn't wearing a red coat.
I have a total lack of respect for anything connected with society, except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer. Brendan Behan
A couple of things came to my mind right off the bat:
1. It's in color !
2. A photo from Gary that mildly resembles those that we ordinary souls shoot on many occasions. And
3. I think I've seen something similar before...in the gallery here...but without the boy.
I think it's a photo of layers of elements. A simple design that works.
i think the fact that hes wearing a coat (red or not) ruins it for me. i just don't see people at the beach wearing coats, or maybe if it was just a light jacket (waist length) it might be ok.
other wise i love the colors and the interaction between the boy and the boat.
I like the various bands of color and lighting throughout the shot. If you were to look at either the top or bottom in isolation they almost don't look like they're part of the same shot, yet they transition nicely from one to the other. The gulls are a nice catch, as is the ship on the horizon.
As for wearing a coat at the beach, I've seen that so many times that I didn't even think twice. Here in northern CA the beaches can get quite cold at times. I guess it's all your frame of reference.
Tom . . .I'm glad his mom does not get him Red coats as well. This is my son, Kyle who happens to have autism. Water and animals are a couple of things that really can hold his attention. While I was busy shooting, he was enjoying his time by the water. Quite cold this time of year, hence the jacket and hat.
With tripod set, I must have taken over 20 shots of him there trying to catch the waves and birds and his position in frame at the same time. This I feel was by far the best of the bunch
Thanks as always.
AgingEyes . . .lol, when you put it like that it does make me realize that I don't offer up many color images.
I usually like to desaturate my works as personally I find that color can be a distraction. However, there are times that call for it and I felt this was one. Yeah, there were lots of layers to work with this day, and a vertical composition could bring it together like a big club sandwich.
Thanks AE.
Greg . . .thanks for the time. I really only did this in a vertical crop, it just felt natural for some reason in this scene. I do believe you are correct that there is a slight left leaning tilt.
I will correct that .
Dylan8i . . .thanks for taking the time to comment. I feel like PC here in that I see people at the beach all the time in coats because I usually like to get to the shore in the winter when there are no crowds and there is a powerful mood in the air. In actuality, the coat was something that I felt was a strong element in the scene. It says that this is a cold day and somehow in my mind makes this scene more "dangerous" and desolate. I's helpful to me to understand that this does not and will not come across to everyone.
thanks.
PC . . .Thanks. Yeah, the time of day and the sky conditions were just setting up all these great layers to work with. As I said to Tom, I just sat there trying to get the gulls and the waves and my boys posture to all work together. Good thing those freighters move so slowly . . .
Thanks for your time, PC
Gary .. it's a lovely shot. What makes it for me is that lovely band of salmon sky between the sea and the clouds. Your son does indeed seem to be peering at the ship in the distance, which makes the viewer invent a "story" for the image (always a plus sign in my book).
It is a beautiful image Gary. I agree with other reviewers that the different bands of color are a strong asset of the picture. However to me the strongest element of the image is the boy himself and I feel that a crop of the top portion of the photograph would serve to better focus the viewers attention on the strongest portion of the photo which of course is the boy. Another very nice photograph Gary that only enhances your reputation more here at PR.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

Thanks Mike, Larry.
yeah, the salmon colored sky is one reason why I felt the need to keep the color on this one. You know, it amazes me how many people I know who either have or know of an Autistic child. I was thinking about starting a thread in viewfinder or off-topic about kids with disabilities. I bet there are alot of members here who have or know of one and maybe a discussion and place to share pics and stuff would be good.
Thanks, Mike.
Larry, I think your crop suggestion could be good. I'll have to play around with it.
The only thing I don't like about this pictue is that I can't see all of it at once on my monitor LOL. Thanks for sharing. I have a grandson who also is autistic. He is one of my favorite photographic (Human Subject) when he's not looking that is. Nice capture with a great memory.
Thank you, MB1. I appreciate your thoughts on the mentioned details
MW. . .well, there we have another one. I like to photograph my son as well, but he sometimes loses his patience with me and it shows in the shots.
Sorry about the large image. I just started viewing on a 21" monitor and so the image here looks like "normal" size to me. Are you using a 19"? I guess it might not fit entirely on the screen with that and I need to consider that when i post these pics.
thanks for the commets.
bindows . . .this was without flash and shot at about 130mm range. The lighting of the day was very good, which is why I headed out there for a bit of shooting. Some enhancing in PS editing.
Thanks for comenting.
uilq. . .glad you feel it works. Much appreciated.
Dylan . . .thanks for pointing that out. I can only guess that maybe MW has his screen set at a low resolution making everything on screen larger.
thanks all
i have a 17 inch widescreen (laptop screen) thats in 1920 x 1080 resolution and i can see it all, with just a bit of room to spare.
Okay I have a 19" monitor and 50+ year old eyes.....I tried a Higher res and the picture fits just fine.......but the print is a little hard to read I hate getting old. Thanks for the tip.

Ha, I know what you mean. I had perfect vision all my life, exceptional as a matter of fact and just recently I had to get myself some reading glasses. I never use them though but have just started wearing them once in a while when i'm at the screen.
You caught that wave just at the prefect time. Also beautiful color gradation. Compositionally, all the elements work. In my humble opinion, I think your subject would've looked better crouched rather than standing... a very minor detail. Great shot!
Robert
great picture. It makes your mind wonder and somehow you get transformed into the child and wonder or dream about whats out there. Great all I can say. you rock
:23:
What would be a great photo essay would to do shot with Autistic kids in different settings such as this . And then send them to the the Autistic center for awareness and maybe you could help comfort families with your photos.

Gary - I think you did a good job making him look relatively small in comparison to the ocean and sky, and waves. Everything has its space in this photo - nothing's cramped, which is nice. The only criticism I could make, if any, would be that it seems somewhat 2-D, probably due to the background sky's red/pink looking somewhat flat, almost like bedroom paint Nice catch, even nicer composition.

Awesome shot, Gary! I'm with OT on this one. Just shaving the minutest amount from the top without losing too much (that color and the gulls are beautiful) may (and I do say MAY) add to the strength of the image. But it's a great capture! Kudos!
Robert, racedraper, GB1, and Dbutler (great to see you on !)
Thanks for your comments.
I agree a slight crop from the top could bring it out a bit.
Yeah, the 130mm focal range would tend to flatten and compress the image.
racedraper, not a bad idea about the photo essay concept of Autistic and otherwise disabled kids. It has me thinking . . .
