    Sunlit Planter (large file)

Was just going through some of my older D70 shots this morning and found this one. Don't know why but it's always had a certain appeal to me. Do you guys like it?

Love the textures and capture of the colors. D70 did a great job here. I'm not wild about the compostion. Just leaves me wanting more. Either more at the top or maybe a tighter crop on the bottom. I know this sound contradictory, but just the way I see the shot.

I love the texture and the lighting. But again, the composition doesn't do much for me. Perhaps because the flowers are dying and the colors aren't strong? Maybe I'm wishing for more golden colors or stronger contrast. I think the strongest elements are the planter, the wall and the spiky green plant. If there were more plants as strong as the spiky one I think I'd like the composition better. The rest of the plants are a little too "busy" for me and, against the white and the light and the shadows, confuse my eye. I think it would benefit from making the shadows a little darker and making the greens a little greener. Just a bit more contrast would make it more vibrant for me and make the "busy" greens stand out from the whites and blacks better.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, guys. As far as the plants go, they were mid-bloom / healthy, I think I was just too far away / not zoomed in enough to capture that. As for my abstracted compositions maybe I should get in closer there also or just give it up. Seems I'm alone in my "less is more" approach to common household scenery.

I agree that the flowers don't add enough to the photo to make this interesting, whatever the crop. But what is interesting to me are the tones and textures of the tile, the wall and the vase. I would be interested to see this, or a differently cropped version, in B&W.

I would agree with OldTimer here . I like the textures and shadows but would like to see either all of the bottom or top, one or the other. It feels a bit incomplete as it is. But there is enough here that allows me to like and appreciate this shot.

You are not alone. Les Izmore is one of my favorite photographers and I like things pared down to the minimum. A lot of plant arrangements these days seem to be as much different stuff crammed in together - I think its good to not try and include everything, but try and isolate some of the components. The pot seems a bit over exposed here and I think we lose some of the detail and texture in the pot and the foliage spilling over the edge of it. I think you can move in even closer and catch the interplay between the artificial and natural forms.

I like it cropped right under the hanging vine plant ( above the middle seam in the concrete)

    my 2 cents.
