    back with a few shots!

hey, i've been MIA for awhile as i've been taking classes for the first time in years. class is out of xmas, so i'm back for a little while and have some new ones. my girlfriend is in art school and she did this combination photo-sculpture project a little while ago. she built this huge wooden box frame that she photographed in different environments to go with her overall theme. these are a few that i took to help out. the daylight one is purposely blown out as i was was trying to capture the feel of seattle's permanently overcast winter sky but i think i may have overdone it.

looks like GIMP did weird things to the sky in the daylight one as well - TOO much compression!

Greg, I love the bottom shot. You've captured a really cool feel with the sky and the way the structure frames the pole behind it. It's a very unsettling moment, but in a really cool way. The only improvement I can think to make would be to not have cut out the top of the square section. It sort of leaves it with an unfinished, "snapshot" sort of feel to it. That's just my uneducated opinion, though, and should be treated accordingly. I really like the shot.
The top shot doesn't do as much for me, however. The composition is pleasing and you've managed your DOF nicely, but I feel like there's nothing happening. It doesn't seem like an interesting moment or an interesting new take on an everyday object, but rather, just a closeup picture of a nondescript white pole. Perhaps the next reviewer will come on and be absolutely blown away by how you've captured a pole in a way they've never thought of, but it just doesn't work for me. The technique is very nice, but IMO it's a swing-and-a-miss on the subject matter.
Great job with the first one, though. And post some more!

Re: back with a few shots!

i'd agree w/ what you say about both. the project my girlfriend was working on was the sculpture (the white wooden box frame) as a container for the uncontainable so i was instructed to make sure i never had the box enclosed by the frame. the photos were then displayed with the piece. i think without the visual clues of the box physically in front of you, the top shot is even MORE useless as you can't tie it in to the piece. even so it didn't make the cut, so she agrees with you ;)

another interesting one i snuck in on the same night, sans box.
