    B&W for Gary

Gary I tried to do what you suggested on the earlier post. My attempt was to try and give it a pushed Tri X effect. Don't know if I came anywhere close. What do you think?

Nice photo, i dont quite know what a Tri-X effect is but i do like the photos.
Where you trying to get a nice photo of the statues or a photo simulating a horse race?
If you where trying to get a feel of a horse rase maye a shot on a wider angle lens at a more extreme point of view would give some motion to the image.

    In any case, nice images!

Yeah OT...I like the b/w better...but agree with Laurie...a little distance might have given more of a feeling of an actual race...Great shots tho'...

Tim suggested I try this one. Not the best at B&W convertions, but here it is with a little noise added. So???

    OldTimer,
These really look impressive in b&w and I appreciate you giving it a try. The first shot, the shadows under the horses are so impactful and striking. The second shot really stands strong as the horses head being right up in front and the position and face of the rider is interesting. When using that lens, also try getting very close to a subject with the widest angle (28mm) for some very nice compositions. Good work here.

Thanks Gary I appreciate your taking the time to critique. I'm not great at b&w convertions. I was trying to give the photo a Tri X feel I hope I was somewhere in the ball park.

    OT,

Love the most recent black and white. Very mysterious and love the tones!

    Well done,

Old timer, I like the first shot the best of the two. I would say you at least covered the entire zone system...I see white to total black.
Keep me posted on your conversion techniques as I am most interested in that type of work right now.

    Regards

    OldTimer-
Your second picture with the updward focus on one horse and jockey is very powerful and for me, is much better than the group shot of the horses. I get a good sense of the power and size of the scene with this shot. I also am a fan of the Tri-X look you were going for; horse racing has a lot of history -- combine the aged feel of the picture along with the powerful composition, its asks for muted respect. I'd blow it up and frame it.

    Re: B&W for Gary

Thanks guys. I agree that the b&w's are more effective with these images than the color photos were. I appreciated the suggestion to try them in b&w, I really had not even given it a thought. When I first started in photography I shoot nothing but Tri X for about two years. I learned to love the effect of that film. I am very short on PS skills, but I hope that I came somewhere close to duplicating the feel of Tri X pushed a little. I aways rated it at 600 ASA and developed in D76 for 8 minutes, usely got a grain effect that looked similar to what I have done.
