Re: Another walk in the woods

How did this get buried for 3 years without replies? These are stunning!

Hope you dont mind the digging, this is in reply to "rant about critiques" in the viewfinder.

Great tone, I for one like the "blown out" sky. I just wish the waterfall was wider.

    #2
Good composition, I would like it a bit more if the shutter was one stop faster, as the rightmost stream seems too bright for my tastes. Try cropping a little from the right to remove the odd colored rock

    #3
Excellent reflections and color tone. Might be better with a slightly different shutter speed, to either exxagerate or freeze the ripples more, preferably freeze since the log is a bit overexposed as is.

    #4
Log's a bit too bright and crop needs to be a little looser IMO. Good reflections and colors.

"How did this get buried for 3 years without replies? These are stunning!"

your idea is to make the "stunning" more stunning or simply make comment for the sake of making comment.. ???

they are nice pictures.. what more is there to say.. if i posted those i would feel your comments to be simply nitpicks and be irritated by them.. ..

your i like the blown sky regarding number one i would change to "tolerate".. the overall exposure is about as near as u would get it.. the slightly blown sky would be difficult to avoid..

sooo if i posted those pics.. knowing there is not much wrong with them.. a dozen people adding their own opinion nit-picks cos they felt they had to would to be blunt.. p-ss me off..

in fact it has p-ssed me off in the past which is why i have stopped posting such pics..

however getting no comment at all would not be good either.. soooo i would say about those.. nice pictures and leave it at that..

    just my thoughts..

I second the emotion. I like the first and second most especially. The saturation is so cozy

I think the last two might improve with some cropping.

Michael, what are your thoughts on these shots looking back in retrospect? We are all different photographers after 3 years more of experience.

In that particular shot, I like it, it adds to the shot IMHO

What I meant was it's a "rule" well broken.

I agree with most of what Mr. Yuck said. I have never shot waterfalls so my knowledge is limited. But I feel a grad filter or an attempt at HDR would have helped on #1. Trog when you recommend a grad filter it would help if you would give one an idea of what kind, strenght wise.

    Did HDR exist back then?

a fairly weak one greg and it does have to be the cokin style.. say 1 F-stop or perhaps 2 and a very gradual fade.. u can twist it around or slide it up and down for the best results..

an orange or tobacco one will give u nice sunsets.. i mostly just use the dark grey (nuetral) one for landscapes as a matter of course thow..

if u think the pics dosnt need it slide it upwards.. the one i have been useing for some time isnt actually marked to be honest.. but its not excessive and has a gradual fade..

Re: Another walk in the woods

Very interesting shots. They have good clarity in the fore-water (made that word up). But my favorite is the first one ... Very nice color, sort of marlboro. I like how you used a deep DOF to get all in focus on that one. The 3rd and 4th shots could also have benefited from that DOF so that the twigs/logs were in focus. I find the 3rd attactive, though the composition is somewhat busy without a true dominant pt of interest (but the objects are interesting at the same time).

It is funny how old posts come back to life.

I think Photomatix was around in 2003... maybe not.

Wow, I go away for a long weekend, and someone brings up an old post that I had totally forgot about. Thanks for bringing this one back everyone.

To be honest, if I were to take these photos today, I highly dought I would find them post worthy. As I have grown, and learned more about photography, I have become my harshest critic.

Of these images, I think that #3 is my favorite. If I remember correctly, I was laying in the mud to compose that shot. That shot made me want to get an angle viewer for my camera. Saddly, that is still on my wish list.

I should see if I can find the originals of these, and see if there is anything esle I can do with them.

i agree, #3 is the best, I would like to see more of the waterfall though. Overall, a very soft and soothing feel to them though, and the colors are very nice.

trog: In all aspects, forget about it. If you feel the need to bring your attacks to the critique forum under other peoples' posts, you are going to get comments to go along with them.

attacks hey.. no attacks from me just an attempt to go along with mr yucks basic idea..

no reason at all for the derisory "Sheesh" head banging rubbish..

and if u misunderstand so much i would suggest that u also keep your accusations to yourself..
